Description
SALARY
$50,680
POSITION SUMMARY
Repairs and maintains Authority-owned and operated vehicles including light, medium, and heavy-duty buses and trucks, automobiles, mobile operating equipment, and related components such as diesel engines, automatic transmissions, air brake systems, and suspension steering.
Qualifications
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspects, repairs, and maintains mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic units and components.
- Disassembles, adjusts, overhauls, reassembles, and replaces units and parts.
- Cleans units and parts using appropriate solvents and solutions.
- Uses hand and power tools to perform repairs and tests equipment and gauges for proper tolerances.
- Analyzes inspection findings to diagnose malfunctions.
- Assists in training apprentices and other personnel.
- Operates Authority vehicles within the shop area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

CHALLENGES
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Completion of the Bus & Truck Mechanic Apprentice program, or equivalent experience of five years in heavy-duty diesel truck or bus repair, or related education from an accredited trade school.
- Must be classified as a full-time member of Auto Mechanics – Local 701.
- Must pass drug and alcohol testing as per Federal Transportation Administration standards.
- Must hold or obtain a valid Illinois CDL with appropriate endorsements ('P' and 'B').
- Must provide certain hand tools.
- Must pass a physical exam.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Standing, walking, sitting, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), climbing, stooping, reaching, feeling surfaces, talking, hearing, seeing, and working in various environmental conditions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, air brakes, steering, and related systems.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and understand electrical circuitry.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools, hand tools, and test equipment.
- Understanding of environmental safety and basic electrical and electronic theory.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work may involve extreme weather, noise, fumes, chemicals, and working from ladders or in confined spaces.
- Must obtain forklift certification.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZED
- Various hand and power tools.
