Overview

Bayfield School is looking for a full-time bus route driver to provide safe and efficient transportation for students.

Bayfield School District is located in the mountains of Southwest Colorado and is a short drive to Purgatory Resort, Wolf Creek Ski Area, and historic Durango. La Plata County offers outdoor recreation, including trails, rivers, lakes, and winter ski opportunities.

Qualifications
  • CDL Class B with Air Brakes, Passenger and School Bus endorsements; training available if needed.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age 21, satisfactory driving record approved by the Board of Education and insurance.
  • Pass annual Motor Vehicle check, Driving Performance test, Skills Test, Mountain Driving and Adverse Weather tests.
  • Practice confident and safe driving in inclement weather.
  • Pass Department of Transportation physical exam when required.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to handle confidential matters; excellent tact and interpersonal skills.
  • First Aid certificate within three months of employment.
  • Pass random drug and alcohol testing administered by an outside licensed agency.
  • Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check.
  • Completed and submitted BSD online application.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform and record daily pre/post trip safety inspections; report defects to the Transportation Director.
  • Keep the bus clean at all times (swept, dusted, windows cleaned).
  • Obey all traffic laws and mandatory school bus safety regulations.
  • Enforce bus rules in accordance with Board policies; maintain discipline and safety for all students.
  • Learn student names, individual needs, and intervention programs; follow discipline procedures
  • Report undisciplined students using the Bus Misconduct report.
  • Notify the Transportation Director of bus mechanical/electrical failures and tardiness; complete Bus Repair Order forms as needed.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops and transport only authorized students.
  • Report all accidents immediately and complete required reports.
  • Know and practice emergency bus evacuation procedures; participate in drills as required by the district or state.
  • Operate a two-way radio within FCC guidelines.
  • Retain all required annual testing with passing scores.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings, trainings, and related activities; pursue ongoing skill development.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community.
  • Participate in District Safety training and assist in evacuations as needed.
  • Understand and accommodate student diversity.
  • Follow state laws and district policies; work collaboratively with staff and the community.
  • Commit to the district vision of Each Student, Each Day: Wolverine Way.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Salary

Per the Bayfield School District, CDL Routes salary schedule based on education and years of experience.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Outdoor work during student activities; able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to handle objects, and talk/hear; frequent reaching with hands and arms; may be required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds; operate specialized transportation equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception; ability to adjust focus; hear bells, buzzers, horns, etc.
  • Noise level typically moderate to loud.
Work Environment

Considerable exposure to extreme temperatures, outdoor conditions, vibrations, confined spaces, and chemicals such as oil, fuels, and coolants. The employee must be comfortable in indoor and outdoor environments and able to drive district equipment.
