Description

DASH is hiring Bus Operators to join our organization for training on Monday, June 16, 2025.

Under the direction of the Operations Manager and Operations Supervisors, Transit Management of Alexandria’s (DASH) Bus Operator is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services to the citizens and visitors of the City of Alexandria via the DASH bus system. This role involves transporting passengers throughout the city and metropolitan area using DASH’s modern transit fleet. Bus Operators serve as 'Ambassadors of Goodwill,' demonstrating safety, service, and punctuality, while maintaining professionalism and courtesy in passenger interactions. Training salary is $21.90/hour, increasing to $25.70/hour after approximately 4-6 weeks of training.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1. Operate transit buses safely and courteously, complying with all applicable regulations.
2. Provide excellent customer service and passenger assistance.
3. Use on-bus technology such as CAD/AVL systems, destination signs, and climate controls.
4. Assist passengers with disabilities and secure mobility aids as needed.
5. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting issues immediately.
6. Monitor vehicle condition during operation, reporting malfunctions promptly.
7. Report delays, breakdowns, incidents, and other unforeseen issues to the Control Center and complete necessary reports.
8. Safely load and unload passengers, adhering to operational procedures.
9. Follow designated routes and schedules using routing paperwork.
10. Maintain a clean driving record and adhere to traffic laws.
11. Participate in required training, meetings, and shift bids.
12. Adhere to uniform and appearance standards.
13. Communicate rules, regulations, and important information to passengers.
14. Report employment-related issues to management.
15. Address passenger or vehicle issues promptly to ensure a positive experience.
16. Maintain punctuality and professionalism in attendance and conduct.
17. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of or ability to learn transit vehicle operations and traffic regulations.
• Ability to operate on-bus technology.

Physical and Emotional Requirements:

Additional Requirements:

• Possess or obtain within 60 days a valid Virginia, Maryland, or D.C. Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Air-Brake endorsements.
• Maintain acceptable criminal record and pass drug screening as per DOT regulations.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum one year of driving experience; commercial vehicle operation and passenger transport experience preferred.
• Basic computer skills preferred.
