Job description

The Transit Bus Operator is responsible for transporting peoplebetween various places including, on and off campus facilities forschooling, work and across state lines. They are responsible fordriving regular routes and others transport passengers on charteredtrips etc. The Bus Operators are responsible for driving Cars,Trucks, and buses to 60-foot articulated buses (with two connectedsections) that can carry more than 100 passengers. Must Operatevehicles in a safe manner and various conditions. Transit BusOperators are responsible for performing pre-trip and post-tripinspections as well as other basic maintenance. During the summerseason Transit Bus Operators will be given the opportunity to workfor other departments within the Facilities Management Division,such as; Maintenance, Custodial, Design & Renovations, and theGrounds Department. This is to provide work during this time of theyear where work in the transit department is slow or comes to ahalt. The Bus Operators will be responsible for performing andcompleting general tasks. Working independently and exercising goodjudgement and discretion is essential to this job. This is afull-time, benefited position.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • 1. As Essential Personnel, you are expected to be available in theevent of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergenciesincluding clean up required because of severe weather incidents.Performs snow removal activities as assigned, such as shoveling,salting, etc. Transit employees are essential to the overallsuccess of Commencement (May), Orientation and Move-in (August)weekend events and special events that are scheduled in facilitiesthroughout the year, must be available to work scheduled andunscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
  • 2. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties asassigned by the Director of Transit Dept.
  • 3. Must be familiar with the standard concepts, practices, andprocedures of the Transit Department.
  • 4. Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal ProtectiveEquipment (PPE) while completing the job duties andresponsibilities of the Transit craft. Including but not limitedto; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves,steel-toed boots, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, andsunscreen.
  • 5. Responsible for wearing a harness with a lanyard and other PPEif operating aerial lifts to perform & complete assignedjobs.
  • 6. Follows established safety driving procedures and techniques toperform and complete assigned bus routes and/or special charteredtrips to ensure that they and all passengers are safe.
  • 7. Responsible for performing basic vehicle maintenance such aschecking the bus tires, oil and lights to ensure their vehicleisin good working order, clean and presentable to the public at thestart of their shift.
  • 8. Responsible for picking up and dropping off passengers atdesignated locations.
  • 9. Ability to follow a planned route according to a timeschedule.
  • 10. Assists passengers with disabilities to get on and off thebus.
  • 11. Obeys traffic laws and state and federal transitregulations.
  • 12. Ability to interact with passengers in a professional,courteous and helpful manner.
  • 13. Ability to keep passengers informed of possible delays.
  • 14. Ability & knowledge to answer questions about schedules,routes and transfer points.
  • 15. Ability to respond calmly and in a timely manner in stressfulsituations and must be able to continue to calmly operate theirbus.
  • 16. Responsible for reporting accidents or other trafficdisruptions to a central dispatcher, and follow directions whenusing an alternate route.
  • 17. Responsible for dusting, wiping and polishing windows, doors,handrails and furniture such as desks, bookshelves etc.
  • 18. Responsible for emptying office trash cans and recycling binsas well as sweeping, vacuuming and mopping floors.
  • 19. In down periods you will be reassigned to work in other areassuch as grounds, maintenance, custodial, and transportation, asdetermined by the FMD management.
  • 20. Other duties as assigned.
  • 21. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies,processes, products, services and leading industry performancebenchmarks.
  • 22. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fosteringLU’s mission.
Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Minimum1+years of related experience required, or an equivalentcombination of education and experience in the Transit bus drivingfield. Must have a class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) andcomplete a training program. Bus operators must also meet hearingand vision requirements. All bus operators must have a passengerendorsement and air brakes endorsement on their CDL. Certificationsobtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of theemployer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntarytermination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiringit.

Employees must be able to effectively communicate both verbally andin writing, with strong organizational and computer skills.Experience in driving buses on fixed routes is preferred.Individuals in this position must be able to lift up to 50+ poundsand perform duties of a transit bus operator in typical Virginiaclimate. A desire to work with a team to accomplish goals, grow andimprove, and understand/follow directions under stressfulsituations in a calm manner are essential to the job. Employeesmust be courteous, detail oriented, self-motivated, diligent, andtrustworthy. Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) isrequired for travel in the performance of the essential functionsof this position. Proof of a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’sLicense with a Passenger and Air Brake endorsement. An acceptableDMV record, and liability insurance is required.
