Classification Specification

Title: Bus Operator

Purpose: To perform general work functions associated with operating motor vehicles and transporting passengers.

Essential Functions:

1. Drive bus, van, or other passenger vehicles to transport passengers over designated routes according to schedules; pick up and drop off passengers at specified locations.
2. Respond to passenger requests for information or assistance; provide details on routes, schedules, fares, etc.
3. Collect fares, record, and report receipts.
4. Assist disabled passengers into or out of vehicles.
5. Operate wheelchair lifts; secure wheelchairs during transport.
6. Follow traffic regulations; report delays or accidents.
7. Monitor surrounding conditions for safety.
8. Conduct pre-trip safety inspections of vehicles.
9. Perform maintenance tasks such as cleaning and checking equipment; report issues.
10. Follow safety procedures and use safety equipment.
11. Maintain records of trips, mileage, fuel, and activities.
12. Complete reports, trip records, accident reports, etc.
13. Operate a computer for data entry and review as needed.
14. Communicate with supervisors, co-workers, dispatchers, passengers, and the public.
15. Use telephone and radio for communication; relay messages or direct calls.
16. Maintain regular attendance during city business hours.

Additional Functions:

Assist other employees or departments as needed; perform vehicle and area maintenance tasks.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED, vocational/technical training in bus driving, one year of related experience, or equivalent combination. Must obtain and maintain a valid CDL with passenger endorsement within 3 months of employment.

Performance Aptitudes: Data calculation, human interaction, equipment operation, verbal and mathematical aptitude, reasoning, and judgment skills.

ADA Compliance: Ability to exert moderate physical effort; perceive and discriminate sensory cues; work in adverse environmental conditions.
