Job summary

Coastal Community Action, Inc. seeks a dependable Bus Driver to transport preschool children from homes or pickup sites to Head Start centers and on field trips, with strict adherence to safety regulations. You will drive the agency bus, perform basic vehicle checks, and ensure timely arrivals.

You will collaborate with the Center Manager and Transportation staff to plan routes, maintain records, attend in-service trainings, and support safety and positive student behavior aboard the bus.

Qualifications

Job description

Objective

Transporting preschool children from their homes or pickup sites to Child Development Centers (CDC), as well as field trips and special events with proper regard to safety regulations.

Essential Functions
  • Under the general supervision of the Center Manager, the Bus Driver safely transports enrolled children to and from the program and on field trips. The individual may be required to work a split shift as the working hours will vary per route.
  • Relates effectively to the children he/she is transporting and responds reliably and effectively to any emergency situation.
  • Ensures that the bus is in safe operating condition and performs basic operator level vehicle maintenance as necessary. Conducts daily inspections of his/her vehicle to ensure proper fluid levels, inflation of tires, lights are working and wiper blades are in usable condition. The individual will inspect the vehicle for body dents and other related damage and will clean the vehicle’s interior and exterior as required.
  • Upon authorization of the Center Manager, the individual will purchase gasoline and oil for agency vehicle(s) from a designated service station.
  • Assists the Center Manager and Transportation and Facilities Manager (TFM) in reviewing pick-up and drop-off requirements to establish schedules and efficient routing.
  • Occasionally will pick up and deliver supplies for centers and help move equipment in centers.
  • Maintains accurate records on daily mileage and compiles data to prepare reports on activities and accidents as required and ensures prepared reports are submitted to TFM at the end of each month.
  • Attends in-service training sessions and meetings to enhance knowledge of agency methods and policies pertaining to job related duties as well as federal, state and local regulations.
  • Drives the Coastal Community Action, Inc. (CCA) Head Start (HS) bus for transport of children and parents.
  • Sets up bus routes with legal bus stops, assuring children arrive and depart from the center on time.
  • Uses caution and common sense while driving, assuring safe starts, stops, proper signals, speed limit compliance. Immediately reports all moving violations to the Center Manager and TFM verbally and in writing.
  • Attentive to passenger behaviors and ensures a positive social climate.
  • Attentive to health of children boarding the bus.
  • Completes an empty bus check after every drop off route.
  • Coaches and utilizes the Bus Monitor and parents in assisting with seat belt compliance and safe social climate.
  • Ensures that the vehicle is in compliance with all federal, state, local and organizational licensing regulations and transportation policies.
