Job summary

Allendale Public Schools is hiring School Bus/Van Drivers and a Substitute Bus Driver to transport students safely on daily routes and field trips. Starting wage is $23.14 per hour for bus driving, with other routes and trips available based on the Transportation Agreement Wage Scale.

Applicants must hold a Michigan CDL-B with S&P Endorsements, have a safe driving record, pass background checks and training, and be able to read maps and communicate with students.

Starting Wage: $23.14/hr for Bus Driving, other wages follow the APS Transportation Agreement Wage Scale.

Description:

• We are seeking School Bus/Van Drivers to join our team and help ensure the safe transportation of our students.Based on availability, drivers can work a morning route, an afternoon route, or both routes daily. Other trip routes may also be available for drivers .

Qualifications:

• Employee drivers must have a valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with S&P Endorsements (School Bus, Passenger & Air Brake), along with all other requirements to drive a bus.
• Willing to be trained to pass Chauffeur Endorsement AND Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with S&P Endorsements (School Bus, Passenger & Air Brake), along with all other requirements to drive a bus.APS will provide training to new employee drivers and will pay them during the training to obtain the listed license requirements.

• Ability to read and interpret a map, establish, and maintain proper conduct and safety of passengers on the school bus, and accept/relate to students with a variety of exceptional needs.
• Exercise good judgment and extreme caution while operating a school bus.
• Remain calm in an emergency situation.
• Knowledge of the proper application of first aid practices and procedures.
• Recognize mechanical safety hazards in the bus.
• Learn to designate orders of pickup and drop-off, modify bus routes, and prepare related reports.
• Ability to support all students and care for their well-being.
• Understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner.
• Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the required duties safely and effectively.
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.

• Meet all requirements of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and Michigan State Police, including: Criminal background check; Physical examination meeting FMCSA and Michigan standards; and Drug and alcohol testing compliance.

Essential Job Functions:

• Drives a school bus safely in accordance with time schedules, transporting students to and from their homes, a variety of school sites, and on field trips as assigned.
• Oversees the loading and unloading of students, releasing students to authorized individuals.
• Maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers, resolves student passenger disputes, documents, and reports severe student passenger disciplinary cases.
• Conducts established safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily: Pre-Trip assures maintenance of bus is in safe and clean operating conditions: reports needed mechanical repairs, installs special safety equipment if needed, keeps the bus clean by sweeping the interior of the bus, and washes windows.
• Monitors students with special health problems while on the bus: receives written or oral instructions, is aware and alert to any signs of difficulty following prescribed instructions and procedures, administers first aid, and calls for emergency assistance if needed.
• Maintains a variety of records and reports, including but not limited to mileage, routing, maintenance, and time schedules.
• Attend meetings, programs, in-service training, and any other job-related training as assigned.
• Maintains current required licenses and certificates.
• Notifies appropriate individuals of any delays in scheduled routes.
• Assists with other routes when breakdown or other unusual circumstances occur, as assigned. Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Remove all trash and personal items from the bus at the conclusion of each route or trip.
• Sweep the bus interior as needed to maintain a clean and sanitary environment.
• Wipe down the driver area when necessary.
• Report vandalism, damage, or excessive messes to transportation supervision promptly.
• Ensure the bus is fueled to at least the level which it was received before returning it to the lot.
• Secure the bus according to department procedures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Non-Compliance: These expectations apply to regular, substitute, and trip drivers. Failure to return a bus in acceptable condition may result in corrective action in accordance with department policy, district procedures, and the collective bargaining agreement.
