Bus Driver/Transportation Specialist - Long Term Substitute

Welcome to Live Oak School District! Our mission is to empower, inspire, and ensure equitable opportunities for every student to thrive. We teach and nurture the whole child in an academically rigorous, collaborative, and innovative environment. Established in 1872, the district currently serves approximately 1,700 students across three elementary schools, one middle school, one K-8 independent charter school, and one alternative school. The student population is 50% Hispanic, 31% White, 19% Other, with 30% English learners and 60% socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain thorough knowledge of safe bus driving practices, bus operation, safety procedures, and relevant laws, rules, regulations, and Education Code sections pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation.
  • Understand vehicle maintenance and repairs, including proper usage of mechanics tools and procedures.
  • Apply first aid practices effectively and communicate well with students and staff.

Training and Certification:

  • District will provide training and certification.
  • Require valid Commercial Driver's License, medical examination card, California Special Driver Certificate endorsements for school bus drivers, and First Aid Certificate.
  • Complete 20 hours of classroom instruction and 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training related to skills and safety requirements for driving a school bus.

Physical and Educational Requirements:

  • Arm-hand and leg-foot dexterity, visual acuity, ability to sit for extended periods, hearing sufficient to monitor traffic and communicate, and mobility to perform duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with specialized or on-the-job training in skilled trades for at least two years.
  • Two years of vehicle mechanic experience and completion of DOT Brake Inspector Training.
