Job summary

A local community service organization in Harrisburg is seeking a dedicated Bus Driver to ensure safe transportation of children to and from centers. Responsibilities include conducting safety checks, enforcing regulations, and engaging with families during transport. Candidates must hold a valid PA Driver's License and maintain a clean driving record. Additional certifications in Pediatric First Aid and CPR are required. This role is vital in supporting the daily operations and safety of the children during transport.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a Current PA Driver's License and reliable transportation.
  • Must pass initial and annual school bus driver's physical exam.
  • Must pass initial and random drug and alcohol testing as per the law.

Responsibilities

  • Transport children and parent volunteers to and from centers.
  • Conduct fire safety evacuation drills as required.
  • Perform daily safety checks on the bus.
  • Enforce program bus rules and regulations.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Ensures all children are appropriately chaperoned and never left unattended in all situations such as facility, transportation, playground, or community outing.
  • Ensures all children have evacuated the bus, checks for personal item left on the bus and adjusts child restraint system (CRS) for the next group, AFTER EACH RUN.
  • Transports children, younger siblings, and parent volunteers to and from center(s) daily and on field trips.
  • Conducts fire safety evacuation drills on bus as required.
  • Responsible for notifying supervisor for the need of the 3,000 mile/3 month maintenance inspection and state inspection.
  • Performs daily walk around and inside safety check (pre‑trip/post trip) on bus and is responsible for having malfunctions and maintenance issues corrected.
  • Performs general bus cleaning and sanitation.
  • Enforces program bus rules and regulations according to the Pupil Transportation Division, Bureau of Traffic Safety, Harrisburg, PA.
  • Enforces proper safety harness restraints/car seat usage at all times.
  • Responsible for completion of all applicable paperwork, maintenance logs, gas slips, etc. and timely submission of paperwork.
  • Involves parents/families with transportation related experiences and assists in training children and families with pedestrian and rider safety.
  • Coordinates bus activities with Curriculum Support Aides.
  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Provides assistance as needed at the center.
  • Follows the program procedures relating to confidentiality.
  • Attends evening meetings and participates in job related training as required.
  • Performs overnight travel as required.
  • Assists children during morning arrival time, bathroom, and breakfast.
  • Eats breakfast and snack with children sharing the same menu while demonstrating socially acceptable behaviors and manners.
  • Responsible for set up and clean up of snack.
  • Sanitizes dining room tables and chairs.
  • Assists with children on field trips.
  • Mandated Child Abuse/Neglect reporter.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of vehicles and maintenance schedules.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public.
  • Pediatric First Aid and CPR Certification.
Minimum Requirements of Education, Training, and Experience
  • Current PA Driver's License and reliable transportation. (Required)
  • Excellent driving record. (Required)
  • Must pass initial and annual school bus driver’s physical exam and periodic TB screening. (Required)
  • Must pass initial and random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the law. (Required)
  • Free of Child Abuse/Neglect history as verified by proper authorities prior to employment. (Required)
  • Must obtain Child Abuse, PA State Police, and FBI Fingerprinting Clearances prior to starting employment. (Required)
  • Class C with CDL and S&P Endorsement. (Preferred)

If you do not possess a Class C with CDL and S&P Endorsement, it must be obtained within 60 days of hire with in‑house classes and training being provided (Required).
