The Parks Department is hiring a seasonal Bus Driver for the Summer Special Needs Summer Camp.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for supervising the safe transporting of children to and from events/programs, ensuring the bus is inspected and in proper working condition, following all safety regulations, and reporting and complying with accident/evacuation procedures. The bus driver will transport students to and from camp and other activities during the day, following a daily schedule on city or suburban routes.

If using a Sumner County bus, the driver must already be a current employee, maintain trip reports, and submit them on time.

Major Duties
  1. Ensure the safety and well-being of children and adults during transportation.
  2. Arrange for annual bus inspections and ensure repairs are made as needed.
  3. Conduct daily bus inspections and report conditions of concern.
  4. Ensure communication devices are functional before trips.
  5. Arrange for routine maintenance and ensure the bus has sufficient fuel.
  6. Develop and follow safe and efficient bus routes, ensuring no child is on the bus for more than one hour.
  7. Operate the bus in compliance with road and safety regulations and report violations.
  8. Ensure children are secured in age-appropriate restraints.
  9. Manage bus capacity and follow safe loading/unloading procedures.
  10. Maintain bus cleanliness and inventory emergency supplies.
  11. Conduct bus evacuation drills and document them.
  12. Follow emergency procedures in case of accidents, including medical emergencies and reporting.
  13. Work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating accountability.
  14. Follow safe work practices and perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  1. Knowledge of traffic rules and transporting individuals with disabilities.
  2. Ability to sit, stand, and endure various temperature conditions.
  3. Knowledge of city and department policies, laws related to bus operation.
  4. Effective oral and written communication skills; planning and problem-solving abilities.
Scope and Effect

This role supervises transportation for the special needs program, ensuring safety throughout the process.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work involves sitting, standing, stooping, and lifting objects. Assistance with campers during meltdowns may be required. Work is performed at school or outdoor park facilities, sometimes in inclement weather.

Supervisory Controls and Responsibilities

Reports to the Recreation Supervisor and supervises all bus riders, executing departmental policies and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • CDL license with passenger (P) endorsement; school bus (S) endorsement required for school buses.
  • Minimum age of 18 (or 21 for cross-state drivers).
  • Background checks required.
  • Knowledge of disabilities, CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
  • Experience working with children is helpful.
  • Reliable weekday attendance required.
  • Good communication and basic math skills.
