Bus Driver I
JOB DESCRIPTION: To transport children for school purposes in a safe and efficient manner.
QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or GED or an equivalent combination sufficient to perform essential functions. Ability to read/write and to speak polite English.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum age 21 years old
- Arizona State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B minimum
- Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- Arizona CDL Medical Certification
- Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) School Bus Certificate
- Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) IVP fingerprint clearance card
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification
- Register and submit to annual FMSCA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse Queries
- Submit to annual Motor Vehicle Records Request (MVRR)
- Submit to annual and/or biennial DOT Bus Driver Physical
- Pass a biennial Physical Performance Test
- Submit to drug and alcohol drug screening in accordance with federal laws and Governing Board policies
- Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fine finger dexterity, sitting, walking, standing under extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, intense noise, chemicals, odors, blood, and other fluids, exposure to risk of injury or illness
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents, and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety issues and reporting to the Director of Transportation.
- Assists students and other passengers for proper positioning and safe loading/unloading, including emergency situations.
- Communicates with parents, students, teachers, administrators, other drivers, dispatchers, etc. to convey and receive information.
- Reviews safety and evacuation procedures to ensure safety and security.
- Delivers bus services for regular and special education students on scheduled routes and field trips safely and timely.
- Maintains vehicle interior, checks fuel, DEF, scratches, dent, cleans floors/windows/seats to ensure safety, appearance, and sanitation.
- Monitors students, parents, teachers during transit to maintain order and safety.
- Performs pre-trip and intra-stop inspections (child checks, fluids, gauges, tires, exterior condition) to ensure safe operation and meet state requirements.
- Prepares documentation (daily mileage, driver logs, inspection reports, repair reports, incident reports) to provide support and convey information.
- Recommends route adjustments to coordinate and maximize transportation services.
- Verifies student access and egress from the bus to ensure proper loading/unloading.
- Performs other related duties such as office or garage work as assigned.
- Works under limited supervision following standardized practices and operates within a defined budget, utilizing resources from other units when required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
SKILLS required for single technical tasks: safety practices, administer CPR/first aid, non-violent crisis intervention, restraint techniques, operate buses and related equipment.
KNOWLEDGE required for basic math, reading manuals, writing documents, presenting information, analyzing situations, safety practices, reading maps.
ABILITY required to schedule activities, collect data, use equipment, work with diversity, problem-solving, attention to detail, good judgment, work without immediate supervision, meet deadlines, work with interruptions.
SALARY: Full-Time nine position, beginning salary Level BD, employee benefits in accordance with Board Policies.
EVALUATION: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy on evaluation of support personnel.
