JOB SUMMARY

The Bus Driver – Field Trip, transports students and athletes over scheduled routes to and from special excursions; ensures the vehicle of operation is in safe operating condition; and ensures the safety of students during transport, loading, and unloading from buses. This position works a flexible schedule to be released a week in advance and requires a commitment of 20 hours minimum per week prioritizing field trip transportation and when necessary, driving other routes to fulfill the contracted 20-hour-per-week contract.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Driver's License and evidence of insurability
• Must be 21 years of age or older
• Have or obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 60 days of hire. The district will provide all essential training needed to obtain the CDL
• Must successfully pass and maintain the ability to complete the USBE Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Drivers - including the ablility to roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 125 pounds
• Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing
• Hold or obtain CPR & First Aid Certificate within six months of hire

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

These are examples of skills and experience that the best qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

• Prior experience working with children with special needs.
• CDL endorsements (including passenger, air brakes, and school bus).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Drive school bus, and other vehicles, to transport passengers over scheduled routes accessed via an electronic device, to and from school, field trips, and other occasions, in a safe and timely manner
• Assist students and other passengers (e.g. students in wheelchairs, students with special needs, etc.) to provide safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport
• Advise students and other passengers of appropriate behavior (e.g., bus safety rules for students, bus conduct reports, etc.) to reinforce regulations and maintain passenger safety
• Supervise students and other passengers during transit to maintain safety and follow district policy
• Support other personnel as may be required (e.g., emergency situations, etc.) to ensure an efficient and effective work environment. Assist in administering first aid if certified
• Assess incidents, complaints, accidents, and potential emergency situations (e.g. monitor vehicle repair request sheets, etc.) to resolve and/or recommend a resolution to the situation
• Prepare documents and reports (e.g., field trip reports, employee timecards, incident reports, inspection records, passenger misconduct, mileage logs, student counts, routing information, federal, state standards, and district policy reports, etc.) to document activities providing written support and conveying information. Detail bus problems in a clear and concise manner (e.g., vehicle repair request, etc.) to maintain safe driving and operating conditions
• Report observations and incidents involving students (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) to communicate information to appropriate personnel
• Clean assigned vehicles (e.g. sweep and mop inside of the bus, wipe down seats, clean windows, etc.) to ensure the safety, appearance, and sanitation of the vehicle
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, walk-around inspection including lights, etc.) to ensure the safe operating condition of the vehicle and comply with mandated guidelines
• Maintain fluids in assigned vehicle (e.g. gas, oil, water, anti-freeze, etc.) to maintain vehicles in safe operating condition
• Conduct emergency evacuation drills as mandated by state standards to ensure efficiency of procedures and compliance with mandated requirements
• Respond to inquiries (e.g. students, parents, other school personnel, etc.) to provide and convey information
• Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with students, parents and other district employees and stakeholders
• Adaptability and understanding of cultural differences and working in a diverse environment while coping with stressful situations related to students and maintaining confidentiality
• Report observations and/or incidents involving students (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) to communicate information to appropriate personnel
• Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars, as assigned to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions
• Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required
• Work under limited supervision, utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies, accurately processing detailed information, and meeting deadlines
• Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position.
• As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 125 pounds.
• Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
