Job description

This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. The Bus Driver at the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA provides safe transportation to and from program sites while maintaining a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals. The Bus Driver assures the well-being for each participant in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies in accordance with their training. This results in a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Demonstrate the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in relationships with colleagues, members, volunteers, vendors and guests.
  2. Develop and maintain positive relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization.
  3. Maintain physical and mental presence, remain alert at all times while on duty, maintain constant attention to children, and remain aware of bus surroundings.
  4. Perform equipment and supplies checks and ensure appropriate equipment and supplies are available as needed. Clean and store equipment per branch procedures. Maintain maintenance and repair records of vehicle(s). Schedule and monitor repairs.
  5. Complete thorough before-and-after trip checks each day and record all information, such as gas level, mileage, and maintenance on designated forms.
  6. Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, and complete related reports as required.
  7. Know, follow, and enforce all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including those for the prevention of child abuse and the Rule of Three.
  8. Follow all Child Care and Camp procedures and guidelines including those pertaining to the child care discipline policy, health and safety, forms, reports, and staff expectations as required by the YMCA, licensing, and state health department code.
  9. Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class C or Non-CDL class 1 or 2 required for those driving vehicles with less than 16 passengers.
  2. Current CDL class C for those driving vehicles with 16 or more passengers.
  3. Must have safe driving record.
  4. One or more years of experience transporting children preferred.
  5. Desire and ability to work with children and track record of building relationships with staff, volunteers, and parents.
  6. Remain calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  7. Must be observant, safety-conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency.
  8. Must complete new employee trainings and department onboarding.
  9. Must possess and maintain valid CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within 30 days of hire.
