Job summary

Suwannee County Schools is seeking a Bus Driver to transport students safely to and from school sites and events. The role requires a CDL with passenger endorsement and adherence to district and Florida laws.

Starting salary ranges from $19,446 to $25,640 per year, aligned with the 2025-2026 Salary Schedule. Candidates must meet certification requirements and maintain student discipline and safety on routes.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Transport students to and from school and on assigned trips safely.
• Comply with all state and local laws related to bus transportation.
• Observe safety regulations for school buses.
• Maintain discipline of students and ensure rule observance.
• Maintain and update student registrations, seating charts, stop descriptions and route maps.
• Keep bus clean according to policies.
• Follow assigned route and schedule.
• Suggest changes in routes or loads to Supervisor.
• Complete pre- and post-trip safety inspections and report defects.

Qualifications

• (1) High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• (2) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and verification of an acceptable driver record through Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
• (3) Meet such requirements as may be specified by Florida Law, State Board of Education regulations, or Suwannee County School Board policy.
• (4) Or other appropriate certificates/licenses required by the District.

Physical Requirements

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force regularly to move objects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of highway and traffic safety. Knowledge of and ability to use first aid and CPR. Ability to operate light and/or heavy-duty buses in a safe and economical way. Ability to understand and carry out both written and oral directions. Ability to exercise appropriate disciplinary techniques. Ability to follow a daily routing schedule. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel.

Job Goal

To transport students, safely and efficiently, to and from their school sites and/or special events.

Performance Responsibilities

• (1) Transport students to and from school and on assigned trips safely and efficiently.
• (2) Comply with all state and local laws relative to bus transportation.
• (3) Observe all safety regulations for school buses.
• (4) Maintain discipline of students and ensures that students observe all rules prescribed by law and the School Board.
• (5) Maintain and keep updated all student registration forms, seating charts, stop descriptions and route maps.
• (6) Keep assigned bus clean according to District/transportation policies.
• (7) Follow assigned route and schedule.
• (8) Recommend to Supervisor changes in bus routes or busloads.
• (9) Complete pre- and post-trip safety inspections and notify proper authority of mechanical defects and lateness.
• (10) Discharge students only at authorized stops.
• (11) Transport only authorized students.
• (12) Instruct students in safety precautions and practices.
• (13) Conduct bus evacuations as required.
• (14) Maintain awareness of additional duties related to transportation of exceptional education students, such as door-to-door loading and unloading, assisting with wheelchairs, understanding each student's exceptionality and the development of special loading/unloading procedures.
• (15) Provide emergency treatment when necessary in accordance with training and Board policy.

• (22) Communicate with students, parents, staff and administrators.

• (24) Report all accidents involving a bus.
• (25) Communicate well with supervisor, bus attendants, if applicable, and schools.

System Support

• (26) Exercise responsible leadership when on District school trips.
• (27) Maintain complete and accurate records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulations.
• (28) Complete and submit all required reports.
• (29) Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, District policy and administrative regulations.
• (30) Follow all transportation policies and procedures.
• (31) Represent the School Board in a positive manner.
• (32) Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
• (33) Shall assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.

Applicant must hold appropriate certification or show evidence of appropriate certification eligibility for this position.

Applicant will be held responsible for obtaining proper certification as required by Florida law and NCLB guidelines.
