Job summary

West Lafayette Community School Corporation seeks a dedicated School Bus Driver to operate routes on school days, loading and unloading students safely according to schedules.

The role requires a High School Diploma or GED, a Class B CDL with passenger endorsements, and a clean driving record. You will inspect buses daily, maintain discipline, and follow district policies.

This full-time, 178-day position offers hourly pay starting at $25 per hour and benefits eligibility, with 5.5 hours per day.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • CDL Class B with passenger, air brake, and school bus endorsements required or obtainable.
  • Must have acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Ability to pass DOT drug and alcohol tests.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a school bus on school days on designated routes and times.
  • Transport teachers, students, and others on field trips when needed.
  • Inspect the bus daily for safety, cleanliness, and good working order.
  • Maintain discipline per district policies and report incidents.
  • Ensure no child is left on the bus without supervision, and all have departed after trips.
  • Prepare for and conduct bus drills; evacuations as required.
  • Attend mandatory training and uphold safety protocols.
  • Represent WLCSC Transportation Department professionally.

Job description

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
PAY TYPE: Hourly, Non-Exempt, Classified, Non-Supervisory
PAY RATE: Starting at $25 / hr.
BENEFITS: Eligible for benefits (see attachment)
SCHEDULE: 178 days; Full-time; 5.5 hrs. / day

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Safely operates a school bus on days when school is in session over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, loading, and unloading students at designated locations
  • When needed and as available, transport teachers, students, and others on school field or activity trips
  • Inspect assigned bus on a daily basis prior to transporting passengers to ensure bus is in good, clean, and safe working order
  • Maintain order and discipline in an effective and courteous manner in accordance with district policies, procedures, and report any incidents involving student discipline
  • Follow procedures to ensure no child is left alone on the school bus without adult supervision at any time, and that all students have departed the bus at the end of each trip
  • Prepare aides and students for bus drills and ensures bus evacuation drills are held as required
  • Properly evacuate children according to written and practiced procedures when an accident or emergency occurs
  • Attends all mandatory training
  • Maintains and enforces all safety protocols and procedures at all times
  • Represents the WLCSC and WLCSC Transportation Department in a professional way at all times
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Education, Training, and Experience Required:
    • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
    • Possession of or ability to obtain a Class B CDL with passenger, air brake, and school bus endorsements
    • Possession of and maintenance of an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics:
    • Must be 21 years of age or older
    • Must meet or exceed medical requirements of the US Department of Transportation and the State of Indiana as stated by IC 20-9-1-3-1 Section 1A
    • Ability to pass all drug and alcohol tests as required by the US Department of Transportation
    • Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations with sufficient mental ability to handle receipts, road maps, road signs, and to calculate mileage
    • Ability to follow directions well
    • Displays positive, enthusiastic, and professional attitude
    • Ability to work as a team with other staff
    • Displays dependability and punctuality
    • Ability to physically assist in safety procedures including evacuation of passengers
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Must remain seated for extended periods, operate a bus, assist students with boarding, and manage the safe transportation of children
  • Will work in all weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, etc.) and navigate through traffic, school zones, and various road conditions
  • May work near others, often within a few feet
  • Possible exposure to noise or disruptions while performing job duties
