JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
License/Certification
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger and School (P&S) Bus endorsements required.
Skills
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills; ability to take directions; and ability to exhibit a positive attitude.
Work Experience
Three years of carrying an unrestricted driver’s license is required.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
Manage and safely transport students to and from school daily, provide safe transportation for different educational activities, manage student behavior and intervention, and represent the school system in a professional manner.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance; work hours are a split shift and may vary during the school year.
- Contact the route supervisor/dispatch in a timely manner for same-day absences.
- Performs pre-trip inspections of the bus as required by department regulations and post-trip inspections after each route for children or items that might be left on the bus.
- This includes lifting the hood, bending/squatting/kneeling, and reaching.
- Fuels assigned bus as needed to operate daily routes.
- Delivers bus to shop as directed by pre-arranged monthly service schedule.
- Attends all required training meetings, State Safety meetings, and all other meetings as requested.
- Operates school bus in accordance with the laws of Georgia and in accordance with the policies prescribed by Oconee County Schools under all types of weather conditions including, but not limited to, sun, fog, rain, sleet, hail, snow, and ice.
- Maintains external and internal cleanliness of bus as required for safe, comfortable operation.
- Monitors/operates communication devices for essential and emergency transmissions only.
- Ensure safe loading and unloading of students.
- Stay focused and alert when transporting students during all routes.
- Oversee student behavior management.
- Ensure no distractions exist during bus routes.
- Monitor student behavior on the bus and protect students from inappropriate actions of other students.
- Report any infractions or inappropriate behavior to the route supervisor or administrator.
- Provide safety and emergency training to all students.
- During the first week of school, train students on the proper way to ride a school bus, including loading and unloading protocol, proper seating, railroad crossings, and various other issues.
- Provide ongoing emergency training concerning the actions to be taken in various emergency situations on a monthly basis.
- Provide emergency evacuation training that is simulated monthly and practiced twice a year.
- Maintain student confidentiality concerning any issues occurring during routes.
- Act as a school system ambassador.
- Present professional appearance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk, hear, stand, walk, and use hands to feel and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. In an emergency, the employee must be able to lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
