Job summary

Linn County LIFTS Department is seeking a Bus Driver to operate vans/buses for elderly and disabled riders on urban and rural routes. You will ensure safety, assist with boarding, collect fares, and maintain vehicle cleanliness.

The role emphasizes customer service, door-to-door support, and clear coordination with dispatch, with a Monday–Friday schedule from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Linn County, IA.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• One year of paid driving, customer service, or human services experience preferred.
• Valid State of Iowa Driver's License required.

Responsibilities

• Safely drives a county-operated van or bus on scheduled or demand-response routes.
• Assist passengers boarding and disembarking, including lifting and securing mobility devices.
• Provide door-to-door support and help with fare processing when needed.
• Check destinations with passengers and communicate with dispatch.
• Engage passengers to reduce isolation and ensure a safe, friendly ride.
• Perform pre-trip inspections and report any vehicle issues.

About LIFTS Bus Driver:

Operates a van or bus to provide door-to-door transportation services to elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, and other qualified passengers. Ensures passenger safety, comfort, and assistance while navigating traffic and transporting clients to their destinations. Performs routine vehicle inspections, maintains cleanliness, supports dispatch coordination, and engages passengers to enhance customer satisfaction and reduce isolation.

• Safely drives a county-operated van or bus along scheduled or demand-response routes in urban and rural areas.
• Assists passengers in boarding and disembarking, including operating wheelchair lifts and securing mobility devices.
• Provides door-to-door support including walking clients to and from their home or destination, carrying groceries or packages when needed.
• Confirms trip destinations with passengers and assists with fare collection or token processing.
• Engages passengers in conversation to reduce isolation and ensure a supportive and friendly ride experience.
• Conducts daily pre-trip inspections and reports any issues to ensure vehicle safety and compliance.
• Maintains contact with dispatch via radio or mobile communication for schedule updates and emergencies.
• Cleans and maintains the interior and exterior of the vehicle, including windows, floors, and securement equipment.
• Assists in emergency response and evacuation situations under guidance of emergency management officials.
• Records ridership and vehicle maintenance data, including fuel usage, and participates in schedule review and conflict resolution with dispatch staff.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.
• Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the “Voice of the Customer” and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• One (1) year of experience in paid driving, customer service, or human services. Experience driving trucks/vans/buses strongly preferred.
• Valid State of Iowa Driver's License required.
