Hourly Range: $15.25 - $18.37

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Purpose

Rides buses and helps driver ensure safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities.

Essential Job Functions
Student Management
  • Assists students on and off the bus according to their individual needs, including lifting and carrying students with disabilities.
  • Supervises students as they board and exit the bus, and cross the street following established safety procedures.
  • Escorts students into the building and delivers to their assigned destination.
  • Instructs students on safe entering, exiting, and riding rules and regulations.
  • Learns and adapts to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Manages student behavior and reports student discipline problems in a timely manner to appropriate administrator.
  • Communicates with teachers and parents regarding student behavior while on bus.
Routes & Schedules
  • Completes and maintains accurate, updated, and timely records and reports, including route sheet and daily non-notification forms.
Safety
  • Operates equipment according to established safety procedures. Makes sure that seat belts, harnesses, or car seats are used correctly and helps students use safety devices when needed.
  • Follows emergency procedures including evacuation of students as needed and assists driver to administer first aid, if necessary.
  • Follows established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and assisting students.
Other
  • Becomes familiar with and follows procedures established by Transportation and Special Education departments.
  • Assists driver with keeping bus clean, and assists with routine pre- and post-trip inspections.

  • Knowledge of safety protocols, including District rules and regulations, and Texas rules of the road.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws special education and individuals with disabilities.

  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment.

Travel Requirements
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Specialized and adaptive equipment used by students.
  • Posture: Frequent standing and sitting; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent walking and reaching.
  • Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive equipment.
  • Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise and vehicle fumes; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases); works around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; may work irregular or prolonged hours.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency preferred.
  • Certification/License: None.
  • Experience: None.
