Job summary

Loudoun County Public Schools in Leesburg, VA seeks a Bus Attendant to assist with student transport, safety and comfort during morning and afternoon routes. This trainee/part-time position provides on-the-job training and a path to open full-time Bus Attendant roles after training completion.

The role requires following instructions, performing basic first aid and CPR certifications during training, and collaborating with drivers, parents and staff to ensure safe transportation for students.

Qualifications

  • Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate effectively with students, staff and parents in English.
  • Ability to perform basic first aid and emergency treatment procedures (provided during training)
  • National Safety Council First Aid and CPR certifications (provided during training)
  • Maintain all required trainings and certifications during the course of employment with LCPS as a Bus Attendant

Responsibilities

  • In Training: Attends job-related training classes and workshops.
  • Completes school bus attendant training requirements of Loudoun County.
  • Completes National Safety Council First Aid and CPR Certifications (provided during training).
  • Provides physical assistance to students as they board and leave the bus and while in-route.
  • Performs daily pre-trip safety inspection of seats, restraint systems and safety equipment before the bus leaves the parking area.
  • Assists with lifting, folding, unfolding and positioning wheelchairs.
  • Secures children in seats and assists with adaptive devices.
  • Assists the bus driver with reports and maintains a clean, safe bus environment.
  • Communicates with parents, students, staff and guardians about transportation.
  • Completes written reports as required by leadership, policies and procedures

Job Description

This position is a Trainee/Part-Time position. After the successful completion of training, individuals are eligible to apply to open full-time Bus Attendant positions.

Full-Time Bus Attendants are expected to work in both the morning and afternoons on a daily basis.

This position is responsible for the comfort, safety, and physical well-being of students by assisting them as they are being transported to and from school. This position follows specific instructions and procedures and refers nonstandard situations to a supervisor. This employee receives on-the-job training in the basics of safely operating the bus and student management. This position requires work to be performed in the morning and afternoon.

Roles and Responsibilities

While in Training:

  • Attends job related training classes and workshops.
  • Completes school bus attendant training requirements of Loudoun County.
  • Completes National Safety Council First Aid and CPR Certifications (provided during training).
As Part-Time or Full-Time Attendant
  • Provides physical assistance to students as they board and leave the bus and while in- route.
  • Performs daily pre-trip safety inspection of all seats, restraint systems, and safety equipment prior to the bus leaving the parking area.
  • Assists with lifting, folding, unfolding, and putting wheelchairs in position.
  • Assists children using adaptive devices and secures children in seats.
  • Assists the bus driver in completing reports and in maintaining a clean, safe environment inside the bus.
  • Assists substitute bus drivers with route information
  • Converses with the parents, students, school staff and guardians regarding the students transportation on the school bus.
  • Performs related work as directed.
  • Completes written reports as required by departmental leadership, policies and/or procedures

The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
