Job summary

Tuscaloosa City Schools is seeking a Bus Aide to support student transportation and safety on assigned routes. The role involves assisting students loading and unloading, securing wheelchairs, and ensuring students remain seated and supervised during transit.

You will collaborate with the bus driver and school staff, participate in required training, and help maintain student records and adherence to district policies. Strong health, mobility, and a commitment to student well-being are essential.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of the students by buckling students in their seats and securing wheelchairs before the bus starts; keep students seated and under control during transportation; assist students with crossing of streets; assist students when loading and unloading at home and at school.
  • Maintains on the bus an updated file on students assigned to the bus.
  • Maintains and demonstrates knowledge and skill in the bus safety equipment, emergency procedures, bus route and pick-up points, and wheelchair lifting and locking equipment.
  • Handles emergency physical problems during the loading, transporting and unloading or students.
  • Coordinate with the driver and transportation and school administrators regarding unusual, suspicious behaviors of events with students.
  • Cooperate fully with school administrators and staff in special request concerning student behaviors and physical management.
  • Accounts for students' personal belongings.
  • Ensures that the bus ride is an educational experience for the students.
  • Submits required reports on time.
  • Notifies dispatcher and SubFinder of absences.
  • Constantly checks and observes on the welfare and safety of students riding the bus.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Good physical and emotional health, including the ability to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes.
  2. The ability to participate in all required bus aide training and professional development.
  3. Physical dexterity, coordination, mobility and visual acuity to perform the essential functions of the position.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy Manual, Students First Act and the Board's Salary Schedule - Instructional Aide - Bus Aide.

EVALUATION

Performance evaluation shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel - GCRK and GCRK-R.
