Job summary

Farmington Municipal Schools is seeking a Bus Aide to assist special needs students during transport to and from school. You will help with safety checks, loading/unloading, and ensuring belts are fastened, while maintaining calm behavior on routes.

Mandatory First Aid/CPR, background check, and physical exam are required; excellent communication, patience, and flexibility are essential for daily operations and MDT participation.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Pass physical examination by a licensed physician.
  • Must pass a substance abuse test as prescribed by policy.
  • Must pass a satisfactory criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect interior of bus; seats, seat belts, safety restraints, wheelchair tie-downs and wheelchair lift.
  • Assist in transporting challenged children and/or children with behavior problems to and from school, as well as related activities.
  • Know and follow district, state, and federal rules, regulations, procedures and law as they relate to the operation of a school bus.
  • Exercise student management through correct use of communication.
  • Load and unload physically challenged passengers using safe and responsible procedures.
  • Be familiar with each child's particular handicap and care.
  • Be able to control the students while on the bus to minimize driver distraction.
  • Ensure that students requiring seat belts have belts on at all times.
  • Be able to control an emergency in a proper manner.
  • Assist in completing bus evacuation drills in accordance with local and state standards.
  • Maintain all requirements to be a school bus assistant in the State of New Mexico.
  • Attend in-service training and comply with contractual obligations.
  • Attend MDT meetings as required.
  • Know how to operate two-way radio correctly and according to policy.
  • Check for students and lost items after each route; keep bus clean and in order.
  • Maintain documents on the bus and read/understand route sheets.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired. The following may be required:

Sitting, standing, lifting, stars, moving about the bus, carrying (up to 60 pounds), reaching, squatting, and kneeling pushing wheelchairs, riding bus for a long period of time and able to hear traffic, emergency vehicles, students and radio.

Equipment/Technology Handled:

Gasoline and Diesel Fuels, Lubricants, Washing Equipment and be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.

Work Environment:

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After hour work may be required.
