Job summary

Hazel Park Schools is seeking a Bus Paraprofessional to support transportation for General Education students. The position is located at the Hazel Park Bus Garage behind Webb Elementary and offers part-time hours during the school year.

Duties include supervising students on and off the bus, assisting with boarding, maintaining confidentiality, and following district safety rules. Candidates should have at least a high school diploma and good communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the confidentiality of all student, staff, and administrative correspondence
  • Perform all assigned tasks in a prompt and professional manner
  • In the absence of immediate administrative direction, act in the best interests of the students and the school district. Deal with teachers, pupils, parents, and the public with friendliness, tact, and poise
  • Supervise students while entering, riding, and exiting the school bus.
  • Assisting students in safely boarding and exiting the bus, including students who may require additional physical or mobility assistance, includes securing wheel chairs if necessary.
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior and reinforce district and transportation expectations.
  • Provide behavioral, emotional, or other appropriate support to students during transportation.
  • Monitor students throughout the route and remain alert to safety concerns, medical needs, behavioral concerns, or other situations requiring intervention.
  • Assist the bus driver in maintaining a safe and orderly environment so the driver can remain focused on the safe operation of the vehicle.
  • Assist students with seat belts, safety restraints, or other approved transportation equipment when required and appropriately trained.
  • Follow individual student transportation plans, behavior plans, health plans, IEP-related transportation requirements, or other district directives as applicable to the assignment.
  • Communicate student concerns or significant incidents to the appropriate district personnel.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and comply with all applicable district policies and state and federal requirements regarding student information.
  • Assist with emergency procedures, evacuations, and other safety protocols as directed.
  • Maintain professional and appropriate interactions with students, families, staff, and transportation personnel.
  • Report safety concerns, student incidents, equipment concerns, or other issues promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Follow all Hazel Park Schools policies, procedures, work rules, and transportation safety requirements.
  • Participate in required training and professional development.
  • Perform other duties related to the position as assigned.

  • Bus Paraprofessional Regular and Special Education Students - This is for General Education Students at this time.
  • 20-28 hours per week, approximately, during the school year
  • 16 hours per week, approximately, during the summer
  • Located at the Hazel Park Bus Garage behind Webb Elementary
  • Class III Salary Schedule
Qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Duties may require the employee to:

  • Sit, stand, bend, reach, and move throughout the bus as necessary.
  • Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus.
  • Provide physical assistance to students when required by the assignment.
  • Respond quickly during emergency situations.
  • Navigate bus steps and confined spaces.
  • Work in varying temperatures and weather conditions associated with student transportation.
  • Perform duties while the vehicle is stationary or moving, consistent with applicable safety requirements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed on a school bus during regularly scheduled transportation routes. The employee may experience noise, vehicle movement, changing temperatures, inclement weather, student behaviors, and other conditions associated with transporting students.
