Job description

Mansion Bureau Chief, Features in New York, NY

The Wall Street Journal’s Features team is seeking a dynamic, experienced bureau chief to run Mansion, our luxury real estate section. Through its digital coverage and weekly print section, this section serves a broad and sophisticated audience: wealthy homeowners and real-estate professionals tracking the market and its biggest trends; aspirational readers who turn to it as a dream book; and anyone interested in social, cultural and economic forces shaping the world through the lens of real estate. This is an opportunity to lead a high-profile team that is prized for its ability to break major news, uncover market-moving shifts, produce deeply reported stories with real authority, as well as smart, buzzy features that capture the culture around home-owning. Working collaboratively with columnists and reporters across Features and with teams throughout the newsroom, the ideal candidate is a self-starting editor with deep experience in real estate and home coverage and a sharp instinct for conceiving distinctive and highly visual digital stories. This editor should know how to turn strong reporting and ideas into journalism that travels across platforms and reaches audiences in different ways—from vertical video and social carousels to newsletters and the WSJ app. The bureau chief will work closely with graphics, video, audience and platform editors to determine the best ways to package, present and amplify Mansion journalism, helping each story reach the right audiences in the right formats. A proven ability to find the stories where real estate intersects with investing, wealth, how people live and where they choose to live is essential. The bureau chief will set the section’s editorial agenda, identify the biggest stories and opportunities, develop ambitious reporting and push the team beyond the expected. The goal is to build on Mansion’s position as an essential source for understanding the real-estate market and the people, money, culture and forces shaping how and where we live—and to ensure that journalism reaches and engages audiences wherever they encounter The Journal.

You will:
  • Assign and edit multiple stories each week that explore the best of real estate and homeownership, from market and investment stories to architecture and design, delivering smart, engaging and useful reading for a broad audience.
  • Manage and coach dedicated reporters and columnists on the Mansion desk, while building strong partnerships across Features and the broader newsroom to bring the best reporters and ideas to real-estate coverage.
  • Generate ambitious, highly shareable story ideas for the team that have clear news value, a strong real-estate hook and sharp, distinctive execution.
  • Bring deep experience covering real estate and a strong understanding of the property market, along with a well-developed network of sources across the industry to break news, uncover trends, develop ambitious features and identify story lines that The Journal can own, from original reporting and exclusive access to distinctive franchises and deeper examinations of the forces reshaping how and where people live.
  • Easily modulate between editing surprising, engaging and well-reported feature stories with fast, news-driven deal reporting.
  • Embody the Features mission to simultaneously inform and entertain our audience.
  • Work collaboratively and egolessly with others—both with Features editors as well as with our style and culture teams of reporters.
  • Know how to amplify traditional profiles, trends and event stories with humanizing detail and a sharp eye for shareable, well-crafted narratives that can become distinctive, high-impact Features stories.
  • Embrace audience data, using metrics alongside strong editorial judgment, great taste and imaginative ideas to shape smarter real-estate coverage.
  • Ensure the top-tier execution and ethical standards of the Wall Street Journal and WSJ. Magazine are consistently met: that work is of impeccable quality across all platforms, and that The Journal’s codes of conduct and overall Standards & Ethics rules are scrupulously met.
You have:
  • 5 to 8+ years experience as an editor on real estate or similar topics, including editing fast-breaking news, reported feature stories, and well-developed enterprise or longer-form features.
  • Experience editing complex subject matter.
  • An ability to identify potential legal issues.
  • An ability to enhance storytelling for our mobile audience, with a sophisticated understanding of how to capture and sustain audience attention across platforms.
  • A proven history of finding unexpected takes on the real estate world, as well as an eye for elevated cultural and visually sumptuous stories that appeal to a general audience.
  • Great contacts and a dogged, indefatigable sense of how to make stories happen.
  • A sense of humor, including a demonstrated ability to find clever, intelligent ways into stories that are being widely covered.
  • A meticulous approach to getting facts and details exactly right, knowing how to push your team to avoid errors and bulletproof high-profile, visible stories with an attention to detail.
  • Visual thinking and a vested interest in how stories will look and present across platforms.
  • A collaborative, team-player attitude, an upbeat outlook and an entrepreneurial spirit as we grow and evolve coverage needs.
