WSP USA is seeking a Building Special Inspector for our New York City office. You will perform field inspections of concrete, steel, and masonry against plans, specs, and codes, preparing clear reports and ensuring quality and safety on building projects.

Under supervision you will verify structural plans, review shop drawings, and assist with pre-construction meetings. Strong communication and problem-solving are essential, with occasional travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required.
  • 0-2 years of relevant post-education experience in construction inspection.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • OSHA 10 Hr safety certification.
  • Familiar with construction inspection principles, field practices, and codes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for technical audiences.
  • Ability to learn, multi-task, and comply with policies.

Responsibilities

Job Description

Takes part in providing inspection on projects to ensure construction compliance with plans, specifications, contract documents, and codified requirements. Tasks may include performing field inspections on various assigned construction projects of basic to moderate scale and/or complexity, which may include examining and evaluating concrete reinforcements, concrete placement, buildings structures. Generate accurate and concise reports regarding assigned aspects of the project. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for inspection, and safety.

Your Impact
  • Independently perform concrete, steel and masonry inspection in buildings from structural drawing, shop drawings, specifications, and other project documents.
  • Under minimal supervision, perform basic inspections of proposed and existing site conditions,
  • Provide sound engineering judgment and coordinate with engineers to any field issue that may arise.
  • Assist with verifying structural plans and specifications, recognizing basic construction, engineering, or survey problems and escalating any differences, errors, or technical problems for appropriate resolution.
  • Assist with reviewing structural plans and shop drawings.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and assist with answering questions from contractors and other attendees.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications related to inspection findings using electronic systems, written/oral feedback, photographs, drawings, diagrams, illustrations, spreadsheets, and reports.
  • Comply with client policies and procedures for inspection work under contract.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exhibit knowledge of current special inspection practices.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals, engineers, inspectors, project managers, superintendent, and contractors.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma.
  • 0-2 years of relevant post education experience in discipline with prior construction inspection experience.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • OSHA 10 Hr safety certifcation
  • Highly familiar with construction inspection principles, field inspection practices, process, methods and techniques.
  • Highly familiar with relevant construction codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Sound self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Analytical mindset to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Ability to provide input and feedback to others in the field such as subcontractors and work colleagues to consistently complete tasks safely, efficiently, and accurately according to specifications.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering preferred.
  • ACI or ICC Concrete Construction Special Inspector certification preferred
  • ICC Structural Masonry Special Inspector certification preferred

Compensation

Expected Salary (hourly): $27.00-$33.00

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
