Building Structural Engineer - Technical Lead

Location: Mt. Pleasant, SC | Job ID: 25985 | Full‑Time / Regular

Position summary

JMT is seeking an experienced structural engineer who will serve as the structural lead on a multi‑disciplinary team for a wide variety of building and facility projects, including commercial, municipal, state and federal government structures. The engineer will manage and execute the entire design process from initial framing layout to construction administration, deliver all structural project objectives—including scope, schedule, and budget—and act as a technical advisor to less experienced engineers.

Essential functions and responsibilities
  • Work within a multi‑disciplinary design team and support the team with structural engineering efforts
  • Lead the structural team to perform framing layout, design calculations, and structural detailing for deliverables such as reports and construction documents
  • Develop construction documents using Revit software
  • Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools
  • Prepare engineering documents for advertisement and construction
  • Coordinate with internal and external team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality
  • Develop and maintain project‑specific quality plans
  • Oversee and manage assigned staff working on the project
  • Manage all technical resources on the project team
  • Assist Office Managers and Practice Leaders with marketing proposals
  • Develop and coordinate structural project scope within technical proposals
  • Participate in client presentations
  • Lead and manage team members by providing leadership and continuous performance management (setting expectations, goals, feedback, 1:1 meetings, coaching) that supports the growth and development of the team
Nonessential functions and responsibilities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required skills
  • Proficiency with discipline‑specific design codes, references and software for structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and timber
  • Knowledge of Revit or willingness to learn Revit
  • Exposure to finite element modeling or building systems analysis programs (e.g., RAM, RISA, ETABS, SAP2000)
  • General knowledge of building construction materials and construction process
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Required experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • Professional Engineer License
  • 10+ years of experience in building/facility structural engineering
  • Experience in design and production of construction documents for structural systems
Preferred experience
  • Proficiency with discipline‑specific design codes, references and software for structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and timber
  • Proficient skills in BIM Revit modeling
  • Professional Structural Engineer License
  • Experience with RAM Structural System / RAM Elements
  • Ability to work as a team member in an overall group
Working conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. The work is primarily sedentary but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office. Field work is required on occasion and may involve exposure to heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
