Job summary

The Salk Institute is seeking a Building Service Engineer to support operation, maintenance and repair of HVAC&R, electrical, plumbing, and central plant systems at our San Diego campus. The role involves hands-on work, safety compliance, and documentation of maintenance activities.

You will diagnose issues with building automation, perform preventive maintenance, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to uphold reliable facility services critical to our research mission.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 5+ years of specialized experience in HVAC&R, Electrical, Plumbing, Central Plant Mechanical, or Fabrication and Welding.
• 1 year of trade school in relevant trades desired; certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain and repair central plant equipment including boilers, chillers, cooling towers, generators, air compressors, and RO systems.
• Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
• Maintain records, generate reports, and use building automation systems to diagnose and troubleshoot issues.
• Perform preventive maintenance and participate in instrument fabrication, welding, and sheet metal work as needed.
• Respond to trouble calls and work with campus teams to ensure reliable facility services.
