Summary Description

Under general supervision, performs building cleaning, facilities and grounds maintenance work in schools and administrative buildings. This is the entry and general worker level in the building service staff positions. Employees receive on-the-job training in the application of simple manual skills, use of cleaning and grounds tools and equipment, and supplies to clean interior of buildings and maintain grounds. The work is repetitive and requires sustained physical effort, including some heavy lifting and moving furniture and equipment. There is exposure to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements. Employees are considered emergency personnel and are required to report to buildings during inclement weather.

Physical Demands: Sufficient strength and freedom from disabling defects to lift and move heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.) and perform manual labor.

Special Requirements: Employees must report to buildings during inclement weather and may be required to assist at other locations during emergencies. Frequent overtime or night work may be necessary. Employees must provide and update a current working telephone number with their supervisor. Uniforms are provided and proper attire must be worn.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of methods, materials, and practices of building and grounds work. Ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds equipment, use cleaning supplies and chemicals properly, monitor building safety, follow instructions, communicate effectively, and meet core competencies of the SSPGS.

Education, Training, and Experience

Completion of ninth grade required; High School or GED preferred. Experience in cleaning and grounds maintenance preferred. Other applicable education, training, and experience may be considered. No certification required.
