Job Summary

Reporting to and under general supervision of the Facilities Engineering Manager – Infrastructure and Projects, the Building Service Engineer (BSE) performs maintenance and repair work on heating, ventilating, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, air conditioning, and water systems needed in support of daily operations and special events at Sonoma State University. The incumbent ensures all heat, ventilation, air conditioning, fire notification, emergency, and elevator systems are fully operational and meet all applicable code requirements. The BSE provides a safe, fully functioning environment in a fiscally responsible manner.

Key Qualifications
  • Two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment systems or equivalent combination of formal coursework in mechanical/electrical controls technology with hands‑on experience.
  • Preferable experience as an on‑site engineer for performances and events in a performing arts setting with diverse performers, campus departments, and their requests.
  • Beginning proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) required; knowledge of Google Suite, computerized work control system, building control systems, and PeopleSoft preferred.
  • Must successfully complete a pre‑placement exam and possess or obtain a valid California Driver’s License for operation of any vehicle or equipment required.
Salary And Benefits

This is a full‑time, non‑exempt position that leads toward permanent status following the successful completion of a probationary period. The CSU Classification Step Range for this position is $5,998–$8,737 per month (step 1 – step 20). Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience; it is not expected to exceed step 5 ($6,492 per month).

This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave, and 15 paid holidays each year. Sonoma State University is also a Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) Employer.
