The Job

San Bernardino County is recruiting for Building Plant Operators who are responsible for monitoring and operating a steam boiler and chiller plant, specializing in maintenance and repair functions and acting as a lead worker over contractors and other personnel on specific jobs. The role includes mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic system maintenance, auxiliary equipment and computerized system oversight, and implementing corrective actions to maintain or restore proper system function.

Conditions of Employment

• Pre‑Employment Process: Applicants must pass a background check including fingerprinting, pre‑employment physical/drug test, and employment history verification before appointment.
• Physical: Frequent walking and standing; continuous lifting up to ten pounds and occasionally up to sixty pounds.
• Environment: Work in small or limited spaces; exposure to electricity, chemicals, infectious materials; exposure to atmospheric pressure, fire, heat, oil, odors; use of specialized protective equipment or clothing.
• Travel: May be required to travel throughout the county; a valid California Class C driver license and automobile liability insurance must be provided.
• Availability: County facilities operate 24/7; schedule will vary and overtime may be required.
• Certification: Must obtain EPA 608 Universal Certification within six months of hire.

Minimum Requirements

• Two years of journey‑level experience operating and maintaining boilers and chillers, including related auxiliary equipment for building systems.

Desired Qualifications

• Possession of LA City Steam License or equivalent Steam Engineer license.
• Experience with building management/automated systems (BMS/BAS).
• Experience overhauling and cleaning boilers, monitoring chillers, pipe fitting, repairing pneumatic and electrical/electronic control devices.
