Job summary

The City of Tomball seeks a Building Plan Reviewer to enforce code compliance on construction plans for residential and commercial developments. You will review plans, evaluate site plans, and ensure adherence to adopted International Building Codes and local ordinances.

You will meet with developers, contractors, and staff to explain requirements and provide technical guidance. Preferred candidates hold ICC certifications or related credentials and have at least 3 years of relevant experience;

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • ICC certifications preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpretation of codes and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Review construction plans, site plans and development-related documents for compliance with adopted building codes and ordinances.
  • Review plans/submittals for residential and commercial projects to ensure minimum requirements are met.
  • Meet with staff, developers, engineers and contractors to explain design standards and city regulations.
  • Provide technical assistance and information on code interpretation and administration of development standards.
  • Support field inspectors as needed.

Job description

The City of Tomball is accepting applications for a Building Plan Reviewer. The position will be responsible for performing construction plan reviews to enforce building code compliance and local ordinance. Processes review and approve plans associated with residential and commercial development. Ensures construction documents meet the adopted International Building codes, ordinances and technical specifications. Various duties that include but are not limited to the following: Writes requirements for plans that fail to satisfactorily meet code. Meets with general-public, contactors, technical professionals, and businesses to respond to inquiries and technical problems. Requires good communication skills and the ability to interpret and explain City procedures and guidelines, other duties as assigned.Preference may be given to applicants who have one of the following certifications:ICC Residential Plans Examiner CertificationICC Building Plans Examiner CertificationICC Residential or Commercial Building Inspector CertificationICC Permit Technician Certification with 5 years of experience.Must obtain one of the following certifications withing 12 months of employment:ICC Residential Plans ExaminerICC Building Plans ExaminerJob Title Building Plan ReviewerReports To Assistant Building OfficialFLSA Non-ExemptPositions Supervised NoneBuilding Plan Reviewer functions include but are not limited to the following.Development Project Review: Reviews construction plans, site plans and other development related applications and documents for compliance with applicable adopted building codes, city design standards and/or state and Federal codes.Reviews plans/permit submittals for new and existing residential, commercial, commercial, additions, remodels, swimming pools, signs and single trade permits by residents and architects to assure all codes are meeting minimum requirements.Meets with staff, developers, engineers, and contractors to respond to questions concerning design standards for and city regulations for development.Provides technical assistance and information concerning code interpretation and administration of the City’s development standards.Provides supportive role to Field Inspectors.Success Framework.
