Job summary

Affiliated Engineers, Inc. is hiring a Building Performance Consultant II to support high‑performance design through performance modeling and analysis in Madison, WI.

You will develop tools and processes to deliver timely, design‑relevant insights to internal teams and clients, drawing on basis of design, surveys, and code research. The role requires a strong CAD/BIM capability, energy modeling experience, and effective communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, architectural engineering, or equivalent.
  • Advanced understanding of building systems across disciplines and experience in at least one discipline such as HVAC, plumbing/piping, electrical, lighting, instrumentation and controls, or building envelope.
  • Advanced understanding of high‑performance design tenets: renewables, daylighting, embodied energy, IEQ, materials, water, life cycle, and built environment planning.
  • Proficiency with at least one building system simulation tool (EnergyPlus, IES‑VE, TRNSYS, eQuest, TRACE, CFD, Radiance).

Building Performance Consultant II – Madison, WI

Why We Need You

In this role, you will support the high‑performance design process through analysis of high‑performance design strategies and concepts, primarily through performance modeling. You will develop and optimize analytical tools and processes to provide timely, design‑relevant insight to internal design teams, partners, and clients, interpreting information set forth in the basis of design and gathered from users, project partners, field surveys, and code research.

Expertise and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, architectural engineering, or another engineering discipline (or equivalent degree and experience with building systems).
  • Advanced understanding of building systems across disciplines and proven experience in at least one discipline such as HVAC, plumbing/piping, electrical, lighting, instrumentation and controls, or building envelope systems.
  • Advanced understanding of major tenets of high‑performance design, including renewable and alternative energy strategies, daylighting, embodied energy, indoor environmental quality, material composition, water efficiency, life cycle assessment, and built environment planning.
  • Proficiency with at least one building system simulation tool, including EnergyPlus, IES‑VE, TRNSYS, DOE‑2 (eQuest), TRACE, CFD, or Radiance; strong understanding of simulation tools for appropriate systems and technologies.
  • Experience with building system analysis and engineering calculation programs.
  • Proficiency in use of CAD/BIM software as necessary for building performance analysis and consulting.
  • Understanding of applicable rating systems, design codes, and standards, and ability to interpret them.
Effective Skills to Help You Flourish
  • Industry certification or license applicable to building system design and performance, such as LEED AP, ASHRAE HPDP, ASHRAE BEMP, ASHRAE BEAP, Green Globes Professional, or AEE CEM.
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE) or the ability to obtain the Professional Engineering license (PE) in one or more states.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn application programming languages (C++, Ruby, Python, Visual Basic, etc.).
  • Strong spoken and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization and time‑management skills.
  • Quick technical comprehension and motivation focused on client outcomes.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Effective working both individually and within team environments.
