Job summary

The City of Wayzata seeks a Building Official to lead building construction, property maintenance, rental housing programs, and related services. You will supervise the permit technician and building inspection staff to ensure smooth operations and excellent service for residents and businesses.

Responsibilities include enforcing codes, reviewing plans, performing inspections, managing budgets, and coordinating with city staff on fire and ordinance matters.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associated degree or certificate in Building Inspection Technology preferred.
• Minimum 5 years building inspection experience or equivalent.
• Minnesota Building Official Certification or eligibility by appointment.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Bachelor's degree in admin/architecture/engineering or related field desirable.
• 2+ years supervisory experience of inspectors.
• 2+ years as a municipal Building Official advantageous.
• Experience enforcing property maintenance codes.
• Experience enforcing rental housing program.

Responsibilities

• Administers and directs enforcement of adopted construction codes and City ordinances.
• Manages application of local, state and federal laws related to construction activity.
• Resolves complex building code compliance issues.
• Performs plan reviews for commercial and residential buildings and mechanical systems.
• Performs building, plumbing, and mechanical inspections.
• Manages property maintenance code and rental housing licensing program.
• Supervises and coordinates building inspection staff and permit technician.
• Provides supervision, mentoring, training, and performance reviews for staff.
• Monitors daily activity and workload of inspectors and budget impacts.
• Coordinates with fire code administration and consultant contracts for inspections.
• Assists in preparing budget and manages expenditures related to inspections and maintenance.
• Interprets and applies building codes and city ordinances; develops customer relationships.
• Attends City Council meetings to provide information on projects and enforcement.
• Engages with designers, contractors, developers, property owners, residents and businesses.

Education

High School Diploma or GED

Associate Degree in Building Inspection Technology or related field or certificate in Building Inspection Technology

Five (5) years of building inspection experience or equivalent combination

State of Minnesota Building Official Certification or will possess by time of appointment

Valid driver's license

Bachelor's degree in administration, architecture, engineering or related field

Two (2) years of supervisory experience of building inspectors

Two years (2) of experience as a municipal Building Official

Experience with administering and enforcing property maintenance codes

Experience with administering and enforcing rental licensing program
