Job Description Summary

Responsible for the project management of all assigned engineeringsystems construction and alteration projects for Miami Universityincluding, but not limited to, mechanical systems and equipment aswell as systems and components involved in energy management andbuilding automation systems and other scopes as needed.Coordination with various agencies such as the Ohio FacilitiesConstruction Commission and related state agencies, AssociateArchitects and Engineers, construction firms, Universitydepartments, and the Physical Facilities staff is asrequired.

Job Description

Duties/Reponsibilities:

Overall project management responsibilities for assignedengineering projects of various sizes and types from initiationthrough project closeout. Duties include oversight of initialplanning, scope of work determination, cost estimate reviews,competitive bidding, contractor negotiations, cost control, workinspections, scheduling, work coordination, move planning andmanagement, project close out, and post occupancy follow up.

• Project Planning – Meet with departments to determine needs andproject feasibility.
• Scope of Work Determination – Develop an accurate scope of work, to include all systems for a complete scopedetermination.
• Project Oversight – Oversight for job costs, including changeorders; prepares project status reports, reviews requests forpayment by consulting A/E’s and contractors, control payment byvaluation of completed work.
• Work Coordination – Responsible for coordination betweenvarious trades, suppliers, and end users to ensure timely andproper completion of project.
• Project Close Out – Inspection of contractor work to ensurecompliance with all project requirements, follow up to be surecontractor completes all final inspection work tasks, and to ensuresubmission of accurate record drawings and operations andmaintenance manuals, conduct post occupancy interviews.

Coordination with department representatives and review ofdocuments for compliance with University Standards.

• Acts as a mechanical / HVAC technical representative to otherPMs for assigned projects managed by the Planning Architecture& Engineering Division of PFD. Reviews design drawings andspecifications with the engineering associate to ensure thatdesigns meet The University’s standards, and reports major designissues to the project manager.
• Assists with updating the mechanical portion of the UniversityConstruction

Standards including working to develop the engineering requirementswhen programming new buildings and major building renovations

Coordination with project managers to provide on-site technicalexpertise.

• Works with the project manager (on their assigned projects totechnically assist) and the contractors throughout the constructionperiod and the final commissioning of HVAC equipment and systems asneeded to ensure compliance with Standards and Contract Documents,and that the installations meet the intent of their designs.Report contract deficiencies to the Project Manager.

Assists in the development and implementation of PlanningArchitecture & Engineering Objectives; develops and pursuespersonal goals and objectives that are in alignment with, andsupportive of, Divisional goals.

Maintains knowledge of current codes and ensures that allapplicable codes are followed on assigned projects. Submits reportsas required to comply with requirement of State agencies and otheragencies having jurisdiction over inspection.

Assists the Director of Planning, Architecture, & Engineeringand the Director of Energy Systems in formulating and directingpolicies and methods to meet total energy management needs andconsumption reduction goals.

Supports Divisional LEAN continuous improvement efforts,sustainability initiatives, customer service philosophy, andproductivity expectations with a focus on: effective and efficientsolutions for the University.

Minimum Requirements:

• 5 years of experience with installation or commissioning ofbuilding mechanical systems for a licensed contractor; and aminimum of 5 years of experience in project management with anengineering firm or mechanical based contractor, a facility-ownerrepresentative and/or military. (OR)
• Associate or higher level degree in engineering; and a minimumof 5 years of experience in project management with an engineeringfirm or mechanical based contractor, a facility-ownerrepresentative and/or military.
• Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to be aqualified driver under the Universities MVR policy.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• The position requires sound knowledge and experience withmanaging project budgets, schedules, and other project managementduties. It requires the ability to organize, prioritize, andperform under pressure in both public contact and internaldepartmental capacity.
• Responsibility: Information and direction are given primarilyverbally. The coordination and review of work are theresponsibility of the incumbent. All duties are performed withinthe scope of the objectives of the Department as well as otherapplicable guidelines.
• Difficulty: Position requires dealing with a wide range ofcomplex technical and project manager related tasks where frequentindependent interpretation and decision is required. Positiondirectly affects the effectiveness of the Physical FacilitiesDepartment and the University community.
• Personal Relations: Position requires face-to-face, telephoneand written communications with all levels of the Universitycommunity and a wide spectrum of outside agencies, schools, andvendors. These communications will range from a simple exchange ofinformation, to requests for assistance or service, to morecomplicated inquiries related to proposed work or work inprogress.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree with major/focus in MechanicalEngineering
• Professional Engineering licensure
