Job summary

The Salvation Army in Gastonia, NC is seeking a Building Maintenance Associate to clean and maintain buildings and grounds on a daily basis and perform routine repairs. The role includes driving a Salvation Army vehicle to transport items between locations and performing minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry tasks.

Essential functions allocate 30% of time to driving and 70% to building maintenance, including cleaning bathrooms, floors, windows, and general upkeep; inspecting and maintaining

• Six months experience performing general housekeeping duties
• Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

• Drives Salvation Army vehicle to transport items to and from Salvation Army locations.
• Picks up and delivers miscellaneous items as needed.
• Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms, cleans sinks and toilets, polishes mirrors, and replenishes supplies.
• Sweeps, vacuums, mops and waxes floors; sweeps sidewalks.
• Cleans windows; dusts and polishes furniture and fixtures.
• Cleans kitchen, activity room, kitchen appliances and/or dining area; washes dishes.
• Empties trash cans regularly; collects trash from grounds.
• Assists in setting up meeting rooms; sets up tables and chairs.
• Monitors light fixtures to ensure bulbs are working; replaces bulbs as necessary.
• Performs routine building maintenance and minor repairs (plumbing, carpentry, electrical).
• Paints inside and outside of buildings; maintains tools and equipment.

Job Details: Job Location: NSC-Gastonia Corps - Gastonia, NC, Salary Range: Undisclosed, Job Category: Property, Job Summary: Cleans and maintains the buildings and grounds to ensure the neatness and cleanliness of the same on a daily basis; performs routine repairs and maintenance of buildings and equipment; performs minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repair work. Drives a Salvation Army vehicle in order to transport items to and from Salvation Army locations.

Essential Functions:

Driver (30%):

• Picks-up and delivers miscellaneous items as needed.
• Drives carefully and observes/complies with all traffic signs and road/weather conditions to ensure the safety of passengers.
• Parks vehicle in a safe and clearly marked parking space.
• Locks vehicle doors when vehicle is not in use.
• Fuels vehicle in accordance with state gasoline regulations and The Salvation Army standards.
• Logs all mileage on standard forms; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
• Arrives at destination according to schedule or telephones ahead when severe delays occur.
• Schedules routine maintenance of The Salvation Army vehicle to ensure safety of passengers and long life of vehicle. Washes and cleans vehicle regularly.
• Drives truck to pick up materials and repair items needed for maintenance work.

Building Maintenance (70%):

• Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms; cleans sinks and toilets, polishes mirrors, and replenishes supplies.
• Sweeps, vacuums, mops and waxes floors; sweeps sidewalks.
• Cleans windows; dusts and polishes furniture and fixtures.
• Cleans kitchen, activity room, kitchen appliances and/or dining area; washes dishes.
• Empties trash cans regularly; collects trash from grounds.
• Assists in setting up meeting rooms; sets up tables and chairs.
• Monitors light fixtures to ensure all light bulbs are in working order; replaces light bulbs as necessary.
• Performs routine building maintenance activities; performs minor pluming repairs required by leaking faucets and clogged toilets; performs carpentry work required to repair dents and/or holes in walls and paints walls.
• Performs routine electrical repairs; replaces and adds receptacles; repairs light fixtures; performs other miscellaneous electrical repairs.
• Performs maintenance and repair of Salvation Army buildings and quarters; repairs roofs, sidings, doors, and steps, etc.
• Paints inside and outside of all Salvation Army buildings.
• Assembles and moves office furniture including chairs, desks, tables, bulletin boards, etc.
• Cleans surroundings after each repair job; ensures that all tools are collected and surroundings are left neat and clean.
• Monitors lighting and changes light bulbs when needed.
• Maintains all tools, supplies, parts, and equipment belonging to the Maintenance Department.
• Performs any other duties as may be assigned.

Other Responsibilities:

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to perform general maintenance and cleaning activities for buildings and grounds.
• Ability to follow instructions and work independently
• Knowledge of acceptable driving techniques and practices.
• Ability to read and follow maps.
• Ability to gauge time needed to arrive at destination.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

• No formal education or experience required
• Six months experience performing general housekeeping duties,
• Or Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications:

• Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clear driving record.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to meet attendance requirements.
• Ability to read and communicate the English language.
• Ability to exert the physical energy required to performing housekeeping and minor maintenance work.
• Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and climbing.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a facility with some exposure to outdoor temperatures, dirt and dust, and/or disagreeable sights and odors.
