Job summary

Rochester Institute of Technology on campus Auxiliary Services seeks a skilled trades role to perform maintenance across buildings, including plumbing, carpentry, painting and more, with afterhours rotation.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of skilled trades: plumbing, millwright, painting, drywall, flooring.

Responsibilities

• Provide skilled trade services and general repairs for building maintenance.
• Assess problems, plan actions, and decide on in-house or contracted solutions.
• Inspect and perform preventative maintenance on plumbing, glazing, roofing, furniture, and more.
• Coordinate maintenance projects with supervisor and oversee vendors as needed.
• Respond to urgent maintenance matters to protect safety of the campus community.
• Utilize Work Order system and record keeping for maintenance activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

This role participates in afterhours maintenance/emergency response rotation

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Provides skilled trade services and performs general repairs to address building maintenance issues (including, but not limited to plumbing, carpentry, doors and hardware, painting, drywall repair, windows and screens, roofing, masonry, hang banners, tile work, furniture repair, steam and natural gas piping, and window shade installation and repair)
• Assesses problems, considers time and cost required, and takes the best course of action (in-house or contract) to complete the repairs
• Inspects and performs preventative maintenance on multiple building systems including plumbing, doors and hardware, glazing, roofing, furniture, indoor and outdoor fountains, storm water collection/storage and pumping/filtering systems, swimming pool operations, pumps, and filters
• Assists supervisor in the coordination of maintenance projects, including but not limited to planning, scheduling, and contract/vendor oversight and communication
• Provides immediate response to building maintenance related matters of urgency, such as major water leaks, broken/hanging glass, malfunctioning elevators, natural gas odor, electrical hazards, downed outdoor light poles, removal of wildlife, or other issues that impact the physical safety of the RIT community. Contains the situation, determines and implements corrective/restorative actions, provides direction to supporting departments, and notifies appropriate personnel
• Utilizes the Work Order system to create, update, and close out work orders. Orders supplies using the Purchase Requisition system, and maintains accurate records of all building maintenance activities
• Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of one or more skilled trade areas (Plumbing, Millwright (doors and hardware), Painting and Drywall, and Flooring)
• Knowledge of basic math
• Skill in analytical thinking/problem-solving
• Skill in written and verbal communication
• Ability to learn the basics of plumbing and pipefitting, painting and drywall (install and finish), door and window repair, and low voltage (50 volts or less) electrical systems
• Ability to safely operate all equipment including, but not limited to; hand and power tools common to plumbing, carpentry, tile, and other building trades

Minimum Education & Experience

• High School diploma or GED
• 2 years of related experience
• Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered

Job Level Overview

Operations, Administrative, Service, or Technical Support Level 2 - An intermediate level role with working foundational knowledge and skills to perform routine and occasionally non-routine tasks. Tasks may require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures. May provide assistance to entry level staff.
