Job summary

The Building Maintenance Technician at Chicago History Museum is responsible for routine building maintenance and support of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and pneumatic systems to ensure reliable operation.

This role reports to the Museum Facilities Director and covers a Tue-Sat 8:00 AM–4:00 PM schedule, with extra hours for special events. It requires strong hands-on skills, safety knowledge, and excellent customer service for staff and visitors.

Qualifications

• 3 years of experience in facilities maintenance
• Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing, and carpentry
• General knowledge of safe work practices & OSHA regulations and conducts self in line with same
• Ability to work off-schedule evenings and weekends for extended hours and emergencies

Responsibilities

• Respond to hot/cold issues, plumbing, light carpentry, basic electrical tasks (not licenced)
• Assist with general repairs, preventive maintenance, and construction projects
• Assist with preventive maintenance and troubleshooting
• Support events with meeting setups, tear downs, and spaces reset
• Provide backup for meeting room AV needs
• Deliver excellent customer service and respond promptly to requests and emergencies
• Identify problems, make recommendations, and implement solutions
• Maintain 24-hr availability for emergency calls
• Work aligned with facilities policies and procedures
• Other duties as assigned
