Support the Department of Public Works in their mission to provide professional public works services to manage natural and built systems, and foster community health, safety, and sustainability. This position is in the Facilities Maintenance Division and may be assigned to either a HVAC or Electrical Crew.
This position may be filled as a Building Maintenance Mechanic II or as a Building Maintenance Mechanic III depending on qualifications.
The preferred hiring range for a Building Maintenance Mechanic II or III is between $19.00 - $24.00 Hourly ($39,520.00 - $49,920.00 Annually). As of March 28, 2024, this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the City’s Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative.

Building Maintenance Mechanic II or III performs responsible skilled work in the maintenance and installation of mechanical fixtures and equipment for City and School facilities. Reports to the assigned Building Maintenance Supervisor (HVAC or Electrical).
Building Maintenance Mechanic II Typical Tasks Include:
Position requires comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and tools of mechanical repairs and pertinent safety requirements; general knowledge of HVAC systems usually found in office buildings and schools; general knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment operation, and general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with equipment maintenance work. Also requires demonstrated ability to: perform general field and shop repairs on HVAC equipment; follow written and oral instructions; and, ability to read and work from engineered plans and specifications.
Building Maintenance Mechanic III Typical tasks include:
Position requires comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and tools of mechanical repairs and pertinent safety requirements; general knowledge of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems usually found in office buildings and schools; general knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment operation, and general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with equipment maintenance work. Also requires demonstrated ability to: perform general field and shop repairs on mechanical equipment; follow written and oral instructions; and, ability to read and work from engineered plans and specifications.
Building Maintenance Mechanic II Minimum Qualifications:
Building Maintenance Mechanic III Minimum Qualifications:
Physical tasks may include walking on uneven or rough surfaces; bending or stooping; working in confined spaces; working on roof tops; climbing a 10 foot ladder; performing repairs and maintenance from a 10 foot ladder; lifting and carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds, with occasional lifting of items weighing over 50 pounds.
Position may require employees to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekends. This position is subject to supporting weather and/or other emergency events and performing stand-by or on-call.
