Job summary

The City of Laredo is seeking a versatile building maintenance worker to perform interior and exterior repairs, electrical, plumbing, HVAC service, and grounds maintenance. This role requires handling materials, operating tools, and driving a City vehicle when needed.

Candidates should have at least one year of general maintenance experience, with proficiency in painting, drywall, carpentry, and related trades. A valid Texas Driver License is required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform interior and exterior household repairs.

Performs a variety of building maintenance and grounds work including but not limited to painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, A/C repairs, and maintaining grounds in a clean, neat, and safe manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Performs interior and exterior household repairs.
  • Works with interior and exterior household paint; repairs drywall, paints interior and exterior of building(s) or home(s).
  • Decides the amount of materials needed to perform repairs and maintenance work on new and existing projects.
  • Performs carpentry repairs; installs doors, replaces doors and window frames, utility rooms, and cabinets.
  • Inspects and repairs air-conditioning and heating systems, refrigerators for domestic homes and apartments.
  • Inspects, repairs, and installs electrical and gas boilers.
  • Repairs and installs plumbing equipment; repairs water lines; unclogs drain lines and repairs other related plumbing components.
  • Reads and uses test meters to measure electric current and uses air conditioning gages.
  • Performs trouble‑shooting work; repairs electrical equipment and wiring in homes and apartments.
  • Performs the cleaning and operating of equipment, such as: spray paint guns, riding mowers, and other related mechanical equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors, and other business contacts.
  • Must follow all rules of telephone courtesy in all telephone communications.
  • Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
  • At least one (1) year of general experience. Experience performing plumbing, painting, electrical, heating and air conditioning repair, and/or maintenance work is preferred.
Valid Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.

Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
