The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a full-time Senior Building Maintenance Mechanic position for the Birmingham Area Command located in Birmingham, AL.
JOB SUMMARY:
Directs, manages, inspects and monitors construction, repair, renovation and preventative maintenance for The Birmingham Command Center of Hope 110,000 sq ft facility and one city block of grounds, Bessemer Corps and grounds, Alabaster Service Center Building ; Birmingham, Bessemer, and Gardendale Officers Quarters and grounds, security, etc. Warehouse 1400 sq ft; Slossfield 60,000 sq ft and grounds, Christmas Warehouse buildings and angel tree set-up; vehicles and equipment located throughout the four county Command service area.
Supervises contractors/vendors at the various locations and performs a variety of skilled maintenance work for the buildings and grounds including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work. Oversees and is responsible for supervising activities at the area command warehouse.
Administrator of Upkeep Facility Management system; prepares budgeting expenses for preventative maintenance issues and forecasts facility maintenance and upcoming capital expenditures. Maintains a supply stock of critical items to use for repairs.
Repairs and inspects all buildings, vehicles and equipment; supervises construction, repair and renovation projects.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Driver’s License, HVAC License or EPA 3 Certification or Electrician License
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tool, and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades.
Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, construction, and air conditioning equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved.
Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment used in the trades involved.
Ability to detect defects in equipment and to make proper repairs or adjustments.
Ability to follow instructions and work with little or no supervision.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Ability to meet attendance requirements.
Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
Ability to perform heavy lifting.
Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Hand saw, Planer, Joiner, Shaper,Table saw, Wood lathe, Drill press, Sanding Machine
Router, Electric drill, Hammer, Screw DriversWire Cutters, Ladder Gauges
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work requires driving a vehicle and working outdoors daily with exposure to physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years course work from a technical or vocational school in construction, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning as well as pluming and electronics,
and
three years experience performing maintenance and repair work for commercial building and grounds,
or
any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
