Description

The McHenry Public Library District is seeking an onsite Building Maintenance & Custodian. This individual will work closely with all library departments to promote a safe, secure, clean, and supportive work environment to support the overall mission of the library by maintaining the interior and exterior of the library buildings, parking lots, and grounds to meet the needs of the library, patrons, and staff.

Schedule:

Mainly day shift hours Tuesday - Friday with possible Sunday and evening hours during events.

Summary:

Under the direction of the Building Services Department Manager, this position works closely with all library departments to promote a safe, secure, clean, and supportive work environment to support the overall mission of the library through maintaining the interior and exterior of the library buildings, parking lots, and grounds to meet the needs of the library, patrons, and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Cleans all areas of the Library facility’s interior and exterior (for example, offices, public areas, restrooms) on a regular basis by following the Library's procedures, methods, and guidelines while utilizing approved chemicals, supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Sets up, arranges, and removes items such as tables, chairs, and podiums for programs and meetings.
  • Drives vehicles or equipment required to perform the duties of this role.
  • Performs general groundskeeping work, including snow removal and ice removal, application of salt, landscaping, mowing, trimming, and other duties to maintain the safety and appearance of the facility and grounds, along with trash collection.
  • Performs building maintenance, repair, and/or alteration projects, including minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical repairs; assembles shelving units, display cases, and other structures or furniture; performing routine preventive maintenance and assisting the Building Service Manager with repair work.
  • Assists in maintaining the inventory and proper storage of custodial supplies like chemicals and paper goods and submits requisitions for needed supplies as necessary.
  • Assists in inventorying equipment and furniture.
  • Monitors building safety and security to identify potential hazards for both patrons and staff. Notifies the department manager or PIC and repairs or cleans the area when necessary.
  • Responds to facility emergencies (like water leaks or biohazard clean up) promptly, follows all safety procedures in their response, and reports injuries or continued/ additional issues to the department manager or PIC.
  • Moves heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies either manually or by using a hand truck, pallet jack, or forklift (will train and certify, if needed).
  • Receives deliveries and routes materials and packages to appropriate staff and departments.
  • Routinely monitors ticketing system, events calendar, internal messaging, and email for work requests.
  • Keeps abreast of library developments by attending workshops, webinars, educational programs, reading periodicals, and specialized literature; attends staff meetings.
  • Serves on library committees.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of custodial and maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of technical training, experience, or education
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, cleaning chemicals, cleaning materials, tools, and equipment
  • Knowledge of and experience using building trades tools and equipment, including mowers, snow blowers, vacuums, floor cleaners, scissor lift, forklift, and hand tools utilized in building maintenance and the ability to safely operate them.
  • Ability to complete basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting tasks
  • Proper safety techniques and procedures
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job
  • May function in a lead capacity with other custodial staff; assigning, monitoring, and directing the work of others on a project basis or monitor the work of outside vendors.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Proficient technology skills including: Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite applications, Internet, and the ability to adapt to changing technology.

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach with hands and arms, get down on floors, climb ladders, manipulate a variety of hand and power tools, and perform other physical tasks.
  • Repeated movements with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers while using a keyboard.
  • Employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time of work, including possible extreme hot and cold weather.
  • Noise level is generally similar to an office environment but may be loud at times.
  • The employee will occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds and push or pull carts up to 250 pounds.
  • Work in conditions typical of maintenance and mechanical rooms, including the presence of dust, dirt, chemicals, grease, oil, solvents, fumes, electrical current, water, and waste products.
  • Needs the mobility to get in and out of building equipment and/or vehicles.
  • Ability to climb interior and exterior ladders to perform general maintenance.
  • Must be able to respond to fire alarms, warning sirens, security calls, and phone pages.
