Job summary

DeKalb County is seeking a Building Inspector to perform field inspections for residential and commercial projects, ensuring code compliance with building, HVAC and plumbing standards.

The role conducts site inspections, communicates findings to owners and contractors, and maintains records. A minimum associate's degree and three years in construction inspections are required, plus ICC or related certifications and a Georgia driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree required; three years of experience in building trades or construction inspections, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• ICC Residential and Commercial Building Inspections Certification or related Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical certification within area of assignment; may require additional certs.

Job description

Salary Range: $54,209 - $87,277 Job Code: 51030 Pay grade: 18 FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.

Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.

Conducts field inspections throughout the County at project sites for code compliance, including residential and commercial site installations; inspects building, framing, footing/slabs, HVAC, and plumbing installations; and reviews approved building plans and compares to actual construction to ensure compliance.

Identifies code violations and needed corrective action; writes letters to contractors, architects, engineers, and/or property owners regarding inspection findings; re-inspects after completion of required corrections/modifications; issues citations for violations; and prepares and presents evidence in Court as needed.

Approves construction activities and final products which meet building, HVAC and plumbing code requirements; and maintains inspection records and related documentation in departmental systems.

Communicates with building owners, contractors, developers, and the general public regarding codes, inspection procedures, and other issues per training to code compliance programs and services; responds to questions, complaints and/or requests for information; and explains and interprets division policies and procedures, ordinances and code.

Performs a variety of administrative duties in support of inspection work; makes and returns phone calls; prioritizes and schedules assigned inspections; completes daily log sheet; preparing inspection files, certification files, building permits, letters, etc.; enters information collected into database; and maintains all related records and files.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's degree required; three years of experience in building trades or construction inspections; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this classification.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain, or obtain within 1 year of employment, an International Code Council (ICC) Residential and Commercial Building Inspections Certification OR Residential and Commercial Inspections Certification in Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical, according to area of assignment. May be required to obtain andmaintain additional certifications as deemed necessary.

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
