Job summary

Fayette Chamber of Commerce (GA) seeks a full-time Building Inspector to perform residential inspections and related duties in Georgia. The role requires interpreting construction documents, ensuring code compliance, and maintaining certification credentials.

The incumbent will document inspections, interact with contractors and the public, and assess damages from disasters. A driver’s license and prior experience in construction trades are preferred.

Qualifications

• Specialized field training plus high school level education are expected.
• Experience related to construction trades or similar roles is preferred (1–2 years).
• Valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the vehicle operated is required.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret residential construction documents and plans for code compliance and field conditions.
• Document and maintain records of inspections, actions, and regulatory efforts; prepare reports and correspondence.
• Meet with contractors, builders, design professionals, and the public to address questions and requirements.
• Perform inspections of new, existing, and damaged structures for conformance to codes and standards.
• Assess damages from disasters and prepare reports; post properties to limit access as needed.
• Maintain ICC certifications (CEUs) to stay current.
• Operate and maintain a vehicle and inspection tools; retrieve open records when needed.
• Issue Certificates of Occupancy for residential construction depending on experience.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job description

This is a full-time position with benefits. This position is responsible for participating in residential building inspection activities in accordance with certifications attained. An incumbent in this position may be designated a Building Inspector I, II or III.

Major Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

• Reads and interprets trade and certification specific residential construction documents and plan and specifications for comparison and code compliance to as-built on-site field construction conditions.
• Documents and maintains accurate records trade and certification specific residential inspections, actions taken, and regulatory efforts; prepares written reports and correspondence.
• Meets and confers with contractors, builders, design professionals, and the general public to address concerns, code questions or building requirements, alternatives, and policies and procedures.
• Performs professional trade and/or certification inspections of new, existing, and damaged residential and commercial structures for conformance to codes, amendments, ordinances, regulations, specifications, and standards.
• Assesses damages to residential and commercial structures from disasters caused by fire, flood, tornados, vehicular impact or other natural or man-made event to determine immediate hazards that jeopardize public safety; prepares disaster assessment reports and posts property to limit or restrict access based on hazard in a limited capacity.
• Maintains required CEUs to keep ICC certifications current.
• Operates and maintains a motor vehicle, assigned tools and materials.
• Retrieves open records request documents from storage.
• Issues Certificates of Occupancy for residential construction depending on experience and certifications attained.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with work experience in the construction trades or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of a valid driver's licenses issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Starting Salary - $52,954.36
