Job summary

The City of Rifle seeks an experienced Building Inspector to perform full city inspections after a short orientation to city procedures, codes, and automated software. Independently verify structural safety and code compliance with approved plans, and manage permits, contractor licenses, and inspection scheduling using city systems.

Requirements: High School Diploma or GED, ICC B1/B2, Colorado driver’s license, pass background/MVR checks; ability to obtain B3 Plans Examiner, M1/M2 within a year.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible building inspection experience.
• High School Diploma or GED; ICC B1 and B2 certifications required.
• Valid Colorado driver’s license; pass background and MVR checks.
• Ability to obtain B3 Plans Examiner, M1 and M2 within 1 year; Spanish preferred.

Position Purpose

Serves as an experienced Building Inspector responsible for the full scope of the City's building inspections following a short training and orientation period focused on City procedures, adopted codes, and automated software. Independently conducts inspections to verify structural soundness, safety, and compliance with applicable codes and approved plans. Manages building permits, contractor licenses, and inspection scheduling using the City's automated software. Receives technical guidance from the Senior Building Inspector. This is an in-person position that is not eligible for regular remote work.

Experience And Training

• Minimum Education:** High School Diploma or GED required. Current ICC certification in B1 and B2 building inspection disciplines required.
• Job Requirements:** Valid Colorado Driver's License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Ability to pass a background check and MVR check with results acceptable to the City of Rifle. Currently holds B1 and B2 Certifications. Has the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire, B3 Plans Examiner, M1 and M2 Mechanical, and other technical ICC certifications required for assigned duties.

Ability to speak Spanish to communicate the technical aspects of the job to Spanish speaking customers highly preferred. Will be required to utilize available technology to communicate with Spanish speaking customers at a minimum.

• Related Work Experience:** Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible building inspection or directly related experience, including demonstrated independent performance of building inspections. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered when it demonstrates the ability to assume the full scope of City building inspections after a short orientation. Experience with permit administration, contractor licensing, and automated permitting or inspection software is desirable.

• Special Training or Experience: **Demonstrated ability to identify code deficiencies, document findings, communicate required corrections, and manage an inspection workload. Must be able to learn City procedures and automated software during a short training period and perform assigned duties independently thereafter.

**This a full-time position with benefits including Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as retirement, vacation, sick and holiday pay. The wage range is $27.61 to $36.15 hourly depending on experience and qualifications. This position is open until October 12th, 2026. **
