Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience as a building inspector in a governmental jurisdiction.
  • International Code Council certifications (C3, R5, or C5) or equivalent required.
  • Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be 18 years of age and pass criminal background check.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field inspections of commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential structures for code compliance.
  • Prescribe action to conform to codes and standards.
  • Provide technical expertise and assist in training Building Inspectors.
  • Review plans for complex projects to ensure compliance with building codes, fire safety, and structural design.
  • Assist Senior Building Inspector with scheduling and monitoring inspections.
  • Exercise independent judgment and make sound recommendations based on findings.

Salary Range:$70,720.00 – $89,689.60 (starting wage contingent upon experience)

Hours:Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm

Job Summary:

Under general direction, performs field inspections of all commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential structures for compliance with related codes and regulations. Prescribes action for conformance to codes and standards. Provides technical expertise in assigned functional areas and assists in the training of Building Inspectors. Incumbents are fully competent and expected to perform combination inspections involving specialty areas such as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing outlined in the Building Inspector I job description. Provides plan review of more complex projects and proposed commercial and industrial buildings of all types to ascertain their compliance with building code, fire safety and structural design. Assists Senior Building Inspector in scheduling and monitoring quality of inspections. Incumbents exercise independent judgment and make sound recommendations based on inspection findings.

Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience as a building inspector in a governmental jurisdiction. International Code Council Combination Plans Examiner (C3) certification, or Residential Combination Inspector (R5), or Commercial Combination Inspector (C5). Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check.

Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or six years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in construction/building trades. International Code Council Combination Inspector (C8) certification, or within 12 months.
