Job description

Performs responsible inspection work in ensuring compliance with established codes governing the installation and alteration of electrical systems and equipment. Inspects all phases of electrical installations and alterations for quality of workmanship, materials, and safety precautions; interprets, applies, and enforces rules and regulations relating to the construction of new buildings, electrical installations, and the repair of existing buildings. Checks plans and specifications for proposed installation to ensure the codes and ordinances have been followed.

Building Inspector I (starting at $42,748/annually)

Graduation from high school and one (1) to three (3) years of experience in construction or as a licensed electrician; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Additional requirements include:

  • Possession of valid certification as a Residential or Commercial Electrical Inspector and complete the Code Academy; or have the ability to become certified and complete within 18 months of hire date.
Building Inspector II (starting at $47,133/annually)

Graduation from high school and three (3) to five (5) years of experience in construction or as a licensed electrician; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Additional requirements include:

  • Possession of valid certification as a Residential and Commercial Electrical and Amusement Device Inspector and at least one additional trade certification (Building, Plumbing, or Mechanical) or specialty certification (Residential Energy, Commercial Energy, Fire Protection, or Erosion and Sediment Control).
  • Possession of valid Electrical Journeyman's card.
Building Inspector III (starting at $51,959/annually)

Graduation from high school and five (5) to seven (7) years of experience as a certified Residential and/or Commercial Electrical Inspector; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Additional requirements include:

  • Possession of valid certifications as a Residential Combination Inspector or Commercial Combination Inspector (Building, Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical) and Amusement Device Inspector.
  • Possession of valid certification in Plan Review for Electrical and at least one additional trade area (Building, Plumbing, or Mechanical) or specialty (Residential Energy, Commercial Energy, Fire Protection, or Erosion and Sediment Control).

Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia at all levels.

This position is considered to be essential (County designation as ALPHA). In the event of an emergency/inclement weather conditions, the incumbent is expected to report to the worksite in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures, or as notified by a supervisor.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including amp meters, volt meters, calculators, phase testers, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. There is a great deal of walking and standing while performing the inspections, some stooping when checking equipment at pump stations or in crawl spaces/attics, some climbing of ladders and stairs, and occasional lifting of objects weighing between 5-50 pounds.
