Building Inspector I, II or III

Highland | Planning & Zoning Department

Help ensure that homes and businesses in our community are built safely and meet adopted codes. Highland is seeking a Building Inspector to review construction plans, conduct field inspections, and work with contractors, property owners, and residents to resolve code questions. We may hire at Level I, II, or III based on qualifications.

What you'll do

• Inspect residential and commercial construction for compliance with approved plans and applicable building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire, and zoning codes.

• Review plans and specifications, applying technical judgment to construction methods and materials.

• Explain inspection findings clearly, document violations, and follow up on corrections.

• Answer questions from builders, architects, engineers, property owners, and the public.

• Maintain inspection records and stay current on code changes.

Qualifications by level

• Inspector I: High school diploma or equivalent and either two years of construction industry experience, or one year of related experience plus all four residential certifications. This is a training level for inspectors working toward ICC/State certification.

• Inspector II: High school diploma or equivalent; four years of construction industry experience, including two years of building inspections and plan checking; and full residential ICC/State inspector certification.

• Inspector III: High school diploma or equivalent; six years of industry experience, including five years of building inspections and plan checking; and full residential and commercial inspector certification.

Building Inspector I $25.96 - $33.75

Building Inspector II $28.86 - $40.41

Building Inspector III $32.33 - $45.26

Starting wage will be based on education and experience. This is a non-exempt, full-time position subject to the demands of the building division.

Candidates must be at least 18, hold a valid Utah driver's license, and pass a drug screen and background check. This role includes work at outdoor construction sites in varying weather and on uneven surfaces, as well as travel within the city.
