Job summary

The City of Springfield is seeking a qualified Building Inspector to review plans, inspect construction sites, and enforce municipal and state building codes. You will advise builders, owners, architects, engineers, and lawyers on code requirements and ensure compliance with zoning and safety standards in various projects.

Independent field work, strong judgment, and clear written reports are essential. Certification within 12 months and relevant education are required by state regulations.

Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of municipal buildings and zoning ordinances and state laws related to building construction and maintenance.
• Ability to read and interpret rough and finish building construction plans and specifications and to recognize deviations from such plans in the construction process.
• Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
• Ability to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
• Associate’s degree in building construction or design or five years of experience in supervision per MA guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Examine and pass upon plans and specifications for permits to ensure conformity with legal requirements.
• Advise builders, owners, architects, engineers, and lawyers on construction problems and code requirements.
• Inspect buildings in construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with building and zoning regulations.
• Periodically inspect old or potentially dangerous structures for hazards and condemnation risk.
• Prepare reports to superiors detailing inspections, conditions, actions, and recommendations.
