Job summary

The Town of Summerville is hiring a Building Inspector for a full-time position in Summerville, SC. You will perform field inspections of new construction, renovations, and additions to ensure compliance with building, life safety, and zoning codes, document findings, and communicate with contractors, design professionals, and the public.

The role requires a valid SC license as Residential or Commercial Inspector, an Associate’s degree in construction or related field, and a SC driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed with the SCLLR as Residential or Commercial Inspector.
• Must complete required courses, certification(s), and continuing education units as deemed necessary by the Town.
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license required.
• Experience in municipal code enforcement or construction inspection preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspect new construction, renovations, additions, repairs, and upgrades for code compliance.
• Perform inspections including foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, energy, and occupancy.
• Document deficiencies, issue correction notices, and re‑inspect as needed.
• Evaluate structures for safety and suitability; recommend condemnation when warranted.
• Review plans and engineering documents for compliance.
• Issue stop‑work orders and other enforcement actions as required.
• Maintain inspection records and prepare clear reports; communicate findings clearly.
