Job summary

Jerseydigs in Summit, NJ is seeking a skilled building inspector to ensure compliance with the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. The role is non-exempt with a salary range of $65,505 – $105,394 and requires certification under the Uniform Construction Code and a valid NJ driver’s license.

You will review permits, conduct inspections of residential and commercial properties, and advise on safety and code compliance under the direction of the Construction Official.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform inspection duties with technical judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews permit applications and plan for new construction, renovations and alterations; approves or rejects with written comments, notes and conditions.
  • Participates in joint plan reviews with other licensed officials; processes permits and applications; maintains related records and files.
  • Conducts inspections of premises subject to City license and permit issuance or renewals, and investigates complaints and referrals alleging safety problems, working without permits and other possible violations; reports results to appropriate offices and agencies.
  • Inspects new and existing footings, framing, insulation, sheetrock and other elements in residential, business, public and other buildings and properties to assure conformance with construction code standards.
  • Notifies appropriate officials of deficiencies in installations or workmanship; issues notices of violation, stop work orders, and other forms of disapproval.
  • Advises Director of Community Services on maintenance and installation matters for City owned or managed buildings and properties.
  • Answers inquiries from other officials, property owners, developers, and the public concerning code requirements. Performs related duties as required.

General Statement of Duties

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $65,505 – $105,394

Skilled inspection work in securing compliance with regulations governing building construction, maintenance and alteration. Work involves inspection to review the quality of material, workmanship and safety precautions as set forth in the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and in federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations. Certification as mandated by the Uniform Construction Code is required. Work is performed with considerable independence and requires technical judgment and discretion. Work is performed under the general direction of the Construction Official who reviews through discussions, reports and observation of results.

Position Requirements
  • Possession of a valid New Jersey drivers license is required.
