Job summary

FirstEnergy is seeking a Building Mechanic to inspect and maintain building and facility systems across multiple locations. Emphasis on safety, teamwork, and extending asset life while ensuring safe operation.

The role covers preventive and corrective maintenance, HVAC systems, electrical work, and coordinating maintenance programs. Travel within the regional service territory and shift flexibility may be required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED and 5+ years in building maintenance / HVAC required.
  • Trade School or Apprenticeship preferred.
  • Knowledge of UPS, Generators, 208V and 480V.
  • Certified electrician preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regionally.
  • Able to read blueprints.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 75 lb and carrying 50 lb.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and facility management software.

  • Perform breakdown, corrective and preventative maintenance, room setups, service requests, inspections.
  • Coordinate and administer preventative and corrective maintenance programs.
  • Perform HVAC maintenance, review contractor proposals and perform corrective maintenance as needed.
  • Modify HVAC maintenance programs to optimize effectiveness and monitor performance.

Job Description

The Building Mechanic participates in the inspection, maintenance, mechanical, electrical, and other building/facility systems at various locations as needed. The primary focus is on safety and teamwork in getting the work completed. The main objective is to ensure building assets are maintained to achieve maximum useful life and safe operation.

Responsibilities
  • Participating in all Company safety programs and practices and promotes safe work methods in all activities. Maintains a high level of safety commitment throughout day‑to‑day functions.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the Company's safety philosophy, its principles, and rules which govern safe working practices and the ability to work and direct work safely and in full compliance with these philosophies, principles, and rules.
  • Performing work assignments including breakdown maintenance, corrective maintenance, preventative maintenance, room set‑ups, service requests, jurisdictional inspections, among other tasks.
  • Coordinating and administering preventative and corrective maintenance program at FE facilities.
  • Working independently or with others to perform HVAC maintenance, reviewing contractor corrective maintenance proposals and performing corrective maintenance when appropriate.
  • Working with management to modify or revise HVAC maintenance program and procedures to optimize program effectiveness. Developing and monitoring performance measures.
  • Monitoring daily operation of energy management systems at specified facilities, including after hours, holidays, and weekends when on call.
  • Installing electrical wiring and equipment of lighting, power supply and complex control systems.
  • Performing regular scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment, which normally consists of changing filters, replacing drive belts, and inspecting components.
  • Monitoring HVAC system performance, recommending system changes, assisting in developing specifications and evaluating options for HVAC projects.
  • Working knowledge of large HVAC systems, including chillers, AHU’s, CRAC units and commercial humidification systems.
  • Installing and removing mobile and permanent partitions, frames openings and hangs doors and sash: installing woodwork trim and moldings; installing and repairing floor tiles, carpet tiles, acoustical and plastic ceiling; and repairing concrete floors and sidewalks.
  • Ensuring change management protocols are followed.
  • Able to work shift work and overtime as assigned; able to work scheduled weekend shifts. Overnight stays as needed.
  • Respond to support operational and emergency situations 24/7.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent and minimum five (5) years’ work experience in building maintenance / HVAC are required.
  • Trade School or Apprenticeship Program preferred.
  • Possess a working knowledge of electrical systems including generators, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, building switchgear, building automation systems, power distribution units, motor control centers and circuitry. A certified electrician would be preferred.
  • Knowledge of UPS, Generators, 208V and 480V.
  • Knowledge of CFC, National Electric Code, and Fork Truck preferred.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be willing and able to travel within the regional service territory.
  • Able to read and work from blueprints.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 75 pounds and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and interact with facility management software programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to communicate information on equipment and systems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, coordinate, and lead a job from start to finish.
  • May be required to work variable shifts which include evenings, weekends and holidays, if necessary. Position may require overnight stays as needed.
